Seraph using common weapons.

In the wilderness, using just your bare hands to fight, hunt, or defend yourself against hostile creatures won’t be very effective for long. To be able to best take down wild beasts or get yourself out of harm's way, you must first start utilizing weapons. There are a variety of weapons, usually categorized by the material they’re made out of (tier), or separated into ranged and melee.

Making weapons can easily become a multi-step process that involves different kinds of mechanics, like knapping , casting , smithing , and grid crafting ; this makes getting strong weapons both challenging and more rewarding in the end.

It’s important to note that some character classes have personal modifiers (traits) that can affect the effectiveness of certain tools:

  • The Hunter class gives a 10% increase to all ranged damage (bows, thrown spears, etc.), but a 15% decrease in melee weapon damage.
  • The Clockmaker class gives a 10% damage increase against mechanical creatures, but a 15% decrease in melee weapon damage.
  • The Blackguard class gives a 20% increase to all melee weapon damage, but a 15% decrease in ranged damage.
  • And the Malefactor class gives a 15% decrease in melee weapon damage.

For a more in-depth explanation of positive and negative traits see Classes .

Obtaining

Loot Vessels

Some weapons can be obtained by breaking Tool Cracked Vessels , which can be found in most ruins .

Scrap Weapon Kit

Some weapons can be obtained using scrap to craft a scrap weapon kit , which can be right clicked to receive a random scrap weapon.
Such weapons are: The Scrap Mace (20% chance), Scrap Axe, Scrap Club (16% chance), Scrap Spear (23% chance) and Scrap Longblade (16% chance).

Crafting

All tools can be obtained by the different crafting mechanics in the game. For most weapons, the process usually entails making a top piece by either knapping , casting or smithing and then combining it with a stick on the crafting grid.

Usage

Range
  • Attacking a mob (melee combat): place the weapon in an active hotbar slot and

strike a target.

  • Attacking a mob (Spear: ranged combat): place the spear in an active hotbar slot and

hold to aim. Releasing throws the lance.

  • Attacking a mob (Bow: ranged combat): place the bow in an active hotbar slot and arrows in the inventory, and

hold to charge the bow. Releasing fires the arrow.

Durability

Different weapons have different amounts of durability, meaning some take more hits before they break than others. A weapon's durability is also affected by its material. The ranking of tool materials, from worst to best in terms of durability, can vary depending on the weapon but usually goes: Stone < Obsidian < Gold < Silver < Copper < Tin Bronze < Bismuth Bronze < Black Bronze < Iron < Meteoric Iron < Steel.

Weapon Types

There are three different categories of weapons:

Type Image Material Description
Ranged Weapons Grid Stone.png Stein
The most simple type of weapon in Vintage Story. Place the stone in your active hand and hold to aim. Releasing throws the stone, causing 1 hp of blunt damage.
Grid Beenade.png Bienen
Just a grenade filled with angry bees. Place the beenade in your active hand and hold to aim. Releasing throws the beenade, causing 0.5 hp of blunt damage and spawning a swarm of angry bees that make 0.25 hp of damage every hit.
Grid Bow.png Bogen
Ranged weapon used for combat when combined with at least one arrow. Place the bow in your active hand and hold to tense it. Releasing fires the arrow.
Grid Copper Spear.png Spear
Both a melee and a ranged weapon. Place the spear in your active hand and hold to aim. Releasing casts the weapon at a target.
Melee Weapons Grid Club.png Clubs
One of the earliest and simplest weapons. Place the weapon in your active hand and press or hold to strike a target.
Grid Copper Spear.png Spear
Both a melee and a ranged weapon. Place the weapon in your active hand and press or hold to strike a target.
Blade-thrusting-forlorn.png Falx
A sword to fend off your enemies. Place the weapon in your active hand and press or hold to strike a target.
Blade-falx-copper.png Falx
Same as the sword. Place the weapon in your active hand and press or hold to strike a target.

While not their primary purpose, some tools are also able to inflict a little bit of damage when swung against enemies, with how much damage they make being directly tied to their tier. Be careful, though, every hit will still count against its durability. Place the tool in your active hand and

press or hold to strike a target.

Grid Ore blasting bomb.png Ore_blasting_bomb Particularly effective for blasting ores, but also for blasting dangers away. Place the bomb close to an enemy and light it with a torch or firestarter; don't get caught in the blast!

Weapon Tiers

The material used to create the weapon determines their tier. In general, higher tier tools have more durability (last longer), and provide more attack power (damage per hit). Higher tier tools will also require advanced material and crafting processes to create.

Type Material Weapon Description
Tier 0 Grid Oak log.png Wood Club Some weapons can be made from wood or metal scraps in an emergency or as first combat solutions in the early game. To get a scrap weapon, the player needs to craft a scrap weapon kit, which can be right clicked to receive either a random scrap weapon or scrap tool.
Metal-scraps.png Metal scraps Club, Mace
Tier 1 Flint.png Stones Spear, Arrow Stone weapons are made by knapping. Only certain types of stone allow for knapping, though, meaning only granite, andesite, basalt, peridotite, obsidian, chert, or flint can be used to make weapons.
Tier 2 Ingot-copper.png Copper Spear, Falx, Arrow Copper weapons can be made by either casting or smithing, offering better durability and attack power. Weapons can also be crafted from the rare base metals gold and silver.
Ingot-gold.png Gold
Ingot-silver.png Silver
Tier 3 Ingot-tin.png Tin Bronze Spear, Falx, Arrow Bronze alloy weapons can be made by casting or smithing , offering better durability and attack power.
Ingot-bismuth.png Bismuth Bronze
Ingot-blackbronze.png Black Bronze
Tier 4 Ingot-iron.png Iron Falx, Arrow Iron weapons can only be made by smithing. Only the Falx and Arrowhead are available as iron weapons.
Ingot-meteoriciron.png Meteoric Iron
Tier 5 Ingot-steel.png Steel Falx, Arrow Steel weapons can only be made by smithing. Only the Falx and Arrowhead are available as steel weapons. Additionally, you have an extra creative-only Admin material type longblade.

Special Cases

There are two different tiers of bows, of which one can only be crafted by the hunter. Arrowheads can be crafted from different tiers of materials, and are discussed on the bow page in more detail.
