Cassava is a source of food, but it cannot be eaten raw. Cassava that has been soaked and peeled provides vegetable nutrition, while peeled cassava that has been dried and ground provides grain nutrition.

Obtaining

Wild-growing cassava
Mature cassava

Small patches of cassava crops can be found while exploring, in areas with the following temperature, precipitation, and forestation.

Parameter Min. value Max. value
Temperature 23 48
Rainfall 0.2 0.6
Forest 0.1 0.4

Chunks meeting these conditions have a 7% likelihood of generating 1-7 cassava crops, which might include a mix of mature and immature crops.[8]

Players starting in a default Temperate area will need to travel tens of thousands of blocks south to reach regions where cassava is likely to generate.

Cassava and cassava seeds cannot be found in cracked vessels [9] or purchased from any traders .[10]

Cultivation

Cassava crops tolerate temperatures 4°C to 44°C.[11] If the temperature drops below 4°C or exceeds 44°C, the cassava crop will become “stunted” and begin to accumulate damage. Stunted cassava crops will yield 50% of normal when harvested. If they accumulate enough damage to die from excessive cold or heat, cassava crops will yield 50% of normal when harvested[12] but the player is guaranteed 1 seed no matter the growth stage.[13]

Cassava crops consume 25 K (potassium) [14] from the soil over 9 stages[15] of growth. Cassava crops take 5 months [16] to mature, (45 days at default settings, assuming a growth rate near 100%. Low moisture or nutrient levels can significantly delay maturation.

Cassava can be harvested by breaking the crop, no tool necessary. Each block of mature cassava crops will yield 14-18 cassavas[17] and 1-2 seed packets. Harvesting at stage 8 will yield 5 cassavas ± 0.8 and 1 seed packet.[18] Harvesting before stage 8 has a 0% chance of getting any cassavas, and a 70% chance of getting 1 seed packet.[19]

Usage

Unlike most mature crops, cassava cannot be eaten raw. Raw cassava also cannot be roasted over a firepit or stewed in a pot. To eat cassava, the player needs to reach the copper age and smith a saw, then craft a barrel .

Soaking

Each raw cassava needs 1L of water to soak in. A barrel holds a maximum of 50L of water, and 50 raw cassava. Fill a barrel using a bucket (holds 10L), a jug (holds 3L) or a bowl (holds 1L). When the quantity of water meets or exceeds the quantity of raw cassava, the barrel interface will describe the output and the Seal button will close the lid of the barrel.

The Block info HUD will display the barrel's contents and progress when the player mouses over the barrel. After 24 hours in-game have passed,[20] the barrel lid will open and the soaked cassava will begin drying. If the quantity of water in the barrel exceeded the quantity of raw cassava when the barrel was sealed, the excess water will still be in the barrel.

To peel soaked cassava, place it in the crafting grid below any knife.

Drying

After 48 hours in-game have passed, soaked cassava becomes dried cassava, whether or not it was peeled. The Block info HUD will display the drying progress when the player mouses over the cassava.

Drying soaked cassava is best done in a container and location that maximize its freshness, so the drying process completes before spoiling begins. If you intend to dry cassava for use as a grain, don't peel it.

Peeled cassava will turn into dried cassava after 48 hours in open storage. Dried cassava has a very long freshness timer of 112 days, but cannot be eaten or cooked on its own. Instead, it must be ground into flour using a quern . Cassava flour is treated like any other grain flour, and can be made into bread or cassava ale .

Cooking

Peeled cassava is categorized as a vegetable, and can be used as an ingredient in:

Dried cassava cannot be eaten even if peeled; it must be ground. Cassava flour is categorized as a grain, and can be used as an ingredient in:

Storage

Once harvested, cassava may be stored in the inventory or stationary containers . Raw cassava also benefits from storage in a cellar . Peeled cassava's fresh lifespan can also be extended with proper storage. Storing peeled cassava in a sealed container such as a ceramic storage vessel will also lengthen the time needed to dry it out.

Notes

  • Grains such as rye can be cooked in a pot to make porridge. Peeled cassava may be added to porridge as a vegetable component, but cannot be the base ingredient. Once dried, the way to get grain nutrition from cassava is to grind it into flour. Flour can make dough for bread and pie, but cannot make porridge.
  • Most crops have the properties butterflyFeed and beeFeed between stage 1 and the final stage. But cassava doesn't.[21]
  • Cassava is also known as "manioc" and "yuca," and numerous regional names. Raw cassava contains toxic levels of cyanide. Cassava starch is the source of tapioca.[22]
