Every farmer's worst nightmare

Hares are one of the common animals found in the world, and are a source of Redmeat and Raw Hide (Small) .

Spawning

Spawn conditions
Animal Range of temperatures Range of rain Max light level
Desert hare 22°C to 40°C 0.20 to 0.45 8
Normal hare -5°C to 25°C 0.30 to 0.90 6
Arctic hare -70°C to -8°C 0.25 to 1.00 8

They spawn in average groups of 1-4. Hares spawn specifically on tall grass blocks. "Tall grass" refers to any grass rising from the ground (not the flat green coloration of grassy soil), including "very short" and "eaten" version. However, they need a full block to spawn. Therefore, hares will not spawn on tilled farm blocks even with grass there, because fallow tilled blocks are not a full block, and do not count as a valid spawn. Hare spawns can also be blocked by placing rocks on soil blocks as it prevents grass from growing. They will not spawn on lit blocks.

Behavior

Hares seek plants to eat, either dropped vegetables and grain, or player grown crops growing on tilled soil (except for pumpkin and onion ). If a hare finds a player's farm, it will eat the growing crops whether the plants are ready to harvest or not. If the hare consumes the crop, the plant will die, leaving only a dry plant. The player will only be able to recover a seed to replant it. This does not happen with wild crops. Hares always flee from players and other mobs within about 12 blocks, even before receiving damage.

Adult hares can jump up to one block high, meaning hares can not jump over fences or out of pits 2 blocks deep. However, hares may be able to jump over fences bordered by water blocks due to the extra boost in height from jumping out of water.

Trapping and breeding

Hares can be mostly domesticated, and can be bred, killed, and adults butchered for animal resources. They can be trapped in a pen and fed by throwing edible vegetables into the pen, or by placing vegetables into a large trough. A female will need to eat 2 portions before it can mate. If a male is close by, she will become pregnant for 5 days and give birth to baby hares, which will grow to adulthood after 336 hours (14 days). The only difference with other domesticated animals is that you cannot see a female hare's pregnancy status. A unique way to trap hares is by simply moving a block from the ground up by two blocks, this will cause adult and baby hares to fall in and be unable to escape. As a bonus, it will even function as a pit kiln.

Hares will lose their fear of the player after 10 generations.

Drops

Butcher the animal by right-clicking while crouching with a knife in the active hand to harvest its corpse.
