Tin is a metal. Its main use is to create alloys such as tin bronze and various forms of solder .

Obtaining

Tin can be found as cassiterite, either as a shallow surface deposit or a deep vein. Cassiterite deposits can be found in metamorphic and igneous rock layers .

Cassiterite on its own can be crushed using a pulverizer and mixed with water in a barrel to produce diluted cassiterite solution, used in dyemaking .

Usage

On its own, tin ingots can be smelted into tin plates, for use in Archimedes screws .

Alloys

Cassiterite nuggets can be mixed with various metals in a crucible to be smelted into ingots of various alloys.

Alloys of tin
Alloy Smelting temperature Tin % Other metal %
Tin bronze 950°C 8-12% Copper : 88-92%
Lead solder 327°C 45-55% Lead : 45-55%
Silver solder 758°C 50-60% Silver : 40-50%
