A bell is a rare underground creature with extremely high health.

Spawning

Bells spawn only underground, at a max of 0.7[2] the world's sealevel. They cannot spawn where sunlight levels are above 5.[3] Artificial light has no effect on preventing spawns. They always spawn alone, but as many as 3 could spawn in the same chunk; the chance of spawning is 0.0018.[4]

Despawning

Bells should despawn if at least 30 blocks away from the player for 15 minutes[5] with the chunk still loaded. If the player gets more than 140 blocks away or uses a translocator, the bell will likely re-appear in its last location when that chunk re-loads.

Bells are attracted to areas of light level 15.[8]

While bells have no attack ability or damage tier, they can summon a large number of other monsters, overwhelming the player if the bell isn't quickly destroyed.

Bells move very slowly: 0.0065 walking, 0.01 swimming.[9]

Bells have a 0.01 chance to perform a "hide" idle animation for 200,000-800,000 milliseconds,[10] or a 0.50 chance to perform a "listen" idle animation for 4000-6000 milliseconds. The "hide" animation is interrupted if the bell receives damage or a player approaches within 10 blocks.[11]

Summoning monsters

When a player gets within 15 blocks of a bell, it begins ringing an alarm that spawns enemies in a range of 12 blocks around it:

The max number of enemies should be 6 at a time, with an interval of 1000-5000 milliseconds between spawning the next.

Harvesting

The player doesn't need to use a knife on a dead bell to get loot; loot drops on its own.

At least 1 tuning cylinder drops from each bell, but some melodies are more common than others:

Tuning cylinder drop rates
Song title Drop chance item ID
The Seraphs 0.1
Through The Grass at Night 0.14
Sunny Village 0.14
The Invention 0.16
Cultured Tavern 0.18
Peaceful Village 0.20
Vintage Story 0.22
Quirky Tavern 0.24
Hallowcroft 0.26

Bell remains disappear after 24 game-hours.[12]
