Tin is a metal. Its main use is to create alloys such as tin bronze and various forms of solder .
Obtaining
Tin can be found as cassiterite, either as a shallow surface deposit or a deep vein. Cassiterite deposits can be found in metamorphic and igneous rock layers .
Cassiterite on its own can be crushed using a pulverizer and mixed with water in a barrel to produce diluted cassiterite solution, used in dyemaking .
Usage
On its own, tin ingots can be smelted into tin plates, for use in Archimedes screws .
Alloys
Cassiterite nuggets can be mixed with various metals in a crucible to be smelted into ingots of various alloys.
Alloy | Smelting temperature | Tin % | Other metal % |
---|---|---|---|
Tin bronze | 950°C | 8-12% | Copper : 88-92% |
Lead solder | 327°C | 45-55% | Lead : 45-55% |
Silver solder | 758°C | 50-60% | Silver : 40-50% |
