Tin is a metal. Its main use is to create alloys such as tin bronze and various forms of solder.
Obtaining
Tin can be found as cassiterite, either as a shallow surface deposit or a deep vein. Cassiterite deposits can be found in metamorphic and igneous rock layers.
Cassiterite on its own can be crushed using a pulverizer and mixed with water in a barrel to produce diluted cassiterite solution, used in dyemaking.
Usage
On its own, tin ingots can be smelted into tin plates, for use in Archimedes screws.
Alloys
Cassiterite nuggets can be mixed with various metals in a crucible to be smelted into ingots of various alloys.
Alloy | Smelting temperature | Tin % | Other metal % |
---|---|---|---|
Tin bronze | 950°C | 8-12% | Copper: 88-92% |
Lead solder | 327°C | 45-55% | Lead: 45-55% |
Silver solder | 758°C | 50-60% | Silver: 40-50% |
