Bears are fearsome creatures having both high health and damage. The can also reach the player several blocks above it and the badly equipped better run on sight.
Spawning
Polar bears are a rare spawn in the north Arctic region. Grizzly and black bears spawn in temperate regions. Panda and sun bears spawn in hot regions.
Bears spawn in the following climate:

Behaviors
Grizzly bears can easily climb out of a pit 3 blocks deep. They can reach over fences 1 block high to kill penned animals. They will chase wild pigs etc. Polar bears can injure a player from within a pit 4 blocks deep, and even escape.
Domestication
Bears cannot be domesticated but can be killed for animal resources.
Harvesting
Players can butcher a bear using a knife to obtain drops. Shift+right click until the butchering process is complete and the GUI opens to allow players to remove drops.
