A pit kiln is a hole filled with combustible materials, used to convert raw clay items into useful earthenware.
Creation
A pit kiln is created by digging a hole at least 1 block deep but no more than 1 block wide, in soil, gravel, or sand. Stone or brick may also be used, as long as each wall of the pit is a full block. Two pits kilns may not be directly connected except at the corners, in a checkerboard pattern.
Because lit pit kilns are a fire hazard, the placement of pit kilns in relation to chests and other flammable items is an important consideration. Protection from the rain is important, but a wooden roof is pointless.
Place raw pottery item(s) in the bottom of the hole, then cover with dried grass, sticks, and some form of fuel. The type of fuel affects the duration until completed.
Usage
Each finished kiln requires:
- An unfired piece of pottery
- 10 dried grass: 5 layers of dried grass (2 grass per layer)
- 8 sticks: 2 layers of sticks (4 sticks per layer)
- 4-8 pieces of fuel (Some of the larger items such as Storage Vessels require 2 layers of fuel to fully cover.)
A pit kiln uses the same amount of combustible materials, whether it contains 1 raw bowl or 4; it's more efficient to fire 4 bowls at a time. You may mix and match items that take up one fourth of the space in a block
Once fueled they must be ignited with a torch or firestarter.
Lit pit kilns can set surrounding items on fire, including flammable materials, tall grass, low-hanging tree branches, and the player.
Rain or wet weather can also put out a pit kiln, forcing the player to re-ignite it and wait for the firing to finish again.
The firing process will take several hours to complete. The fire on top of the kiln will stop burning when it's done, leaving only the finished pottery items in the hole. Finished items appear dark and no longer have "raw" in front of their name. Pottery items may be picked up by right-clicking with an empty hand.
Fuel Efficiency
The following table breaks down length of firing time from igniting the kiln to the finished product being available for pick-up.

Flammability
Images showing how far vertically and horizontally the embers can spread. A lit pit kiln creates a haze of embers directly above it, which are hazardous to adjacent blocks.
- A log 1 or 2 blocks away from the embers horizontally will quickly catch fire.
- A log 3 or more blocks away from the embers horizontally will not catch fire.
- A log 1 block away from the embers diagonally will not catch fire.
- A log in the ground 1 block away from the pit kiln horizontally will quickly catch fire.
- A log in the ground 1 block away from the pit kiln diagonally will not catch fire.
- A log 1 or 2 blocks away from the embers vertically will quickly catch fire.
- A log 3 blocks away from the embers vertically will not catch fire.
