Hides are untreated animal skins.
Obtaining
Raw hides can be looted from most wild or domesticated animals upon death. The following animals have a chance to drop hides:
- small hides: adult hare , adult raccoon , adult fox , lamb , goat kid , deer fawn , and some adult species of deer .
- medium hides: adult pig , hyena , adult wolf , most adult species of goat , and some adult species of deer.
- large hides: adult bighorn sheep , adult gazelle , some adult species of goat , and some adult species of deer .
- huge hides: bear
Most baby animals do not drop any hides.
Usage
A few crafting recipes use raw hides:
Oiled hide
Curing hides with fat creates pelts that can be used in recipes for
- lamellar armor
- fur coat
- knee-high fur boots
- fur gloves
- fur lined reindeer herder shoes
- reindeer herder fur coat
- hunter backpack which adds 5 inventory slots
- longbow
Soaked hide
Soaking and tanning raw hides creates leather that can be used in recipes for
- leather backpack which adds 6 inventory slots
- several types of armor
- a few clothing items
- sling
- books
- dyed leather
- glider
- bows
- leather reinforced wooden shield
- antler mount
Storage
A hide looted from a corpse has 5 days of freshness in the player's inventory. Depending on the ambient temperature, the freshness might be extended by placing hide(s) in a container such as a chest or clay storage vessel. A raw hide may be placed directly on the ground like a rug. When the period of freshness expires, a raw hide begins to rot. After 24 hours 1 hide becomes 1 rot.
See Pelt for details on curing raw hides to make pelts.
See Leather working for details on soaking raw hides to make leather.
