Although cob blocks also protect against the weather and the creatures that inhabit Vintage Story, roofing blocks will transform your hovel into a much better looking house.

Obtaining

Crafting

There are 6 types of roofing blocks players can craft: sod, thatch, bamboo, clay, slate and copper.

Sod roofing

Though their look is quite rustic, sod roof blocks require dry grass , boards and medium fertility soil to create. So they cannot be crafted early in the game since boards require a saw to be crafted.

  • Block shapes: Slanted roofing, roofing corner (inner), roofing corner (outer), roof ridge and roof tip.
  • Material variant: None.
  • Appearance: The type of wood used to make the boards does not affect the final appearance of the sod roofing block.

Thatch roofing

Thatch roofing blocks require thatch (harvested using a knife from tule plants) or hay or aged hay to create. They can be crafted early in the game since these materials are easily obtained.

  • Block shapes: Slanted roofing, roofing corner (inner), roofing corner (outer), roof ridge and roof tip.
  • Material variant: thatch , hay , aged hay .
  • Appearance: Aged thatch roofing blocks have a different appearance from thatch roofing blocks. But they cannot be crafted in Survival mode.

If you use aged hay (Grass) in those recipes, you will not get aged thatch roofing blocks but normal thatch roofing blocks.

Protip:
You can recycle thatch roofing blocks (not aged thatch roofing blocks) if you place them in the crafting grid with a knife on their right. You will obtain 2 thatch, regardless if the block was crafted from thatch or hay.

Bamboo roofing

Bamboo roofing blocks require only bundles of bamboo stakes to create. Those are easily harvested from bamboo plants in the tropical areas using an axe .

  • Block shapes: Slanted roofing, roofing corner (inner), roofing corner (outer), roof ridge and roof tip.
  • Material variant: None.
  • Appearance: Only one appearance available.

Clay roofing

Clay roofing blocks require only shingles to create. They are available in 4 colors: blue, brown, red, and light brown (fire clay).

  • Block shapes: Slanted roofing, roofing corner (inner), roofing corner (outer), roof ridge, roof tip, full block, slab (half-block), stairs.
  • Material variant: Any shingle variant can be used to craft these blocks.
  • Appearance: The type of clay used in crafting affects the appearance of the block.
Clay shingle
  • Raw blue clay shingles and raw fire clay shingles are created using the clay forming mechanics. They require only clay or fire clay respectively. You can turn raw clay shingles into fired clay shingles by baking them in a pit kiln . They can be baked by batches of up to 48 shingles.
  • Brown clay and red clay cannot be found in Survival mode at the moment. Only blue clay and fire clay blocks can be found.
  • You can purchase fired clay shingles (blue, brown, red and fire) from a building materials trader for an average price of 2 rusty gears for a stack of 9.
Blocks

The recipes for each color of clay roofing blocks are identical.

The slanted clay roofing can be crafted in 2 different manners:

Slate roofing

Slate roofing blocks require slate stones and blue clay to create. Slate stones are found on the surface as loose stones or mined in slate rocks underground. Note that fire clay cannot be used instead of blue clay.

  • Block shapes: Slanted roofing, roofing corner (inner), roofing corner (outer), roof ridge and roof tip.
  • Material variant: None.
  • Appearance: Only one appearance available.

Protip:
You can recycle any of those slate roofing blocks if you place them in the crafting grid. You will only obtain 4 slate stones, though.

Copper roofing

Copper roofing blocks require copper plates to create. Two copper ingots are required to forge one copper plate on the anvil using a hammer or a helve hammer .

  • Block shapes: Slanted roofing, roofing corner (inner), roofing corner (outer), roof ridge, roof tip and shingle block.
  • Material variant: None.
  • Appearance: Only one appearance available.

Note that the copper shingle block cannot be crafted in Survival mode since no recipe is available at the moment.

Looting

Roofing blocks cannot be looted in ruins at this time.

Purchasing

You can purchase fired clay shingles (blue, brown, red and fire) from a building materials trader for an average price of 2 rusty gears for a stack of 9.

This is especially useful for brown and red fired clay shingles because those cannot be crafted at the moment. Purchasing those shingles is the only way to craft brown or red clay roofing blocks in Survival mode.

Usage

Building component

Roofing blocks are primarily used to create player structures. Slabs can be placed horizontally or vertically.
