Dye is a liquid in Vintage Story that can be used to change the color of cloth and leather.
Creation
Mordant
- Note: This section does not apply to leather. Colored leather does not need any mordant. This section is about fabric.
To fix the colors, the fabric must first be treated with a mordant.
There are 3 mordants in the game: Diluted cassiterite, Diluted chromite and Diluted alum (they have the same properties).
A mordant solution is made instantly in a barrel by adding 1 Crushed cassiterite or 1 Crushed chromite or 1 Crushed alum to 5 L of water.
You can get these crushed materials by using a pulverizer . You can put the water in the barrel with a wooden bucket .
Then, you place a plain cloth in the barrel to soak in the mordant and you seal the barrel for 8 hours. You need 2 L of mordant for 1 plain cloth. You end up with 1 Mordanted cloth.
Color
Dyes are created in a barrel. All dyes require a specific element that determines the color of the dye. Some dyes can be obtained in several ways. The barrel needs to be sealed for 8 hours for the dye to be ready (except for the brown dye which requires 24 hours).
8L Black dye = 8L Gray dye + Metal scrap
8L Black dye = 8L Gray dye + Rusty gear
8L Gray dye = 8L Water + Metal scrap
8L Gray dye = 8L Water + Rusty gear
4L White dye = 4L Water + 2x Powdered borax
4L Pink dye = 4L Water + 4x Cranberry
4L Red dye = 4L Water + Crushed cinnabar
4L Orange dye = 4L Yellow dye + 4x Onion
4L Yellow dye = 4L Water + 4x Onion
4L Yellow dye = 4L Water + 4x Heather
4L Green dye = 4L Water + 4x Dry grass
4L Green dye = 4L Water + 4x Lily of the valley
4L Blue dye = 4L Water + Crushed lapis lazuli
4L Blue dye = 4L Water + 4x Cornflower
4L Woad Blue dye = 4L Water + 2x Woad
4L Purple dye = 4L Water + 4x Blueberry
4L Purple dye = 4L Water + 4x Black currant
1L Brown dye = 1L Strong tannin
Note: The woad blue dye can be applied to the plain cloth directly. A mordant is not necessary.
Usage
To dye some leather or some mordanted cloth, you place it in the barrel containing the dye to soak it and seal the barrel for 8 hours.
- 4L Dye + 1x Leather = 1x Colored leather
- 2L Dye + 1x Mordanted cloth = 1x Dyed cloth
Dyed cloth is needed to create specific types of clothing . Colored leather is used to make ornate versions of shields .
