The lightning rod is a player-crafted item used to avoid being electrocuted by lightning during thunderstorms.
Crafting
The lightning rod is made exclusively from a copper ingot by smithing.
Usage
Lightning can cause quite substantial damage to the player or his cattle if it strikes nearby, even if they are sheltered inside a house. Lightnings damage creatures in a 8 block radius.
The lightning rod must be placed on a block preferably in height (roof of a house for example).
When a storm arrives, the lightning will hit the lightning rod first. You will then see a shower of sparks explode at the top of the lightning rod. The lightning rod will negate any damage the lightning may have caused.
