The primary interaction key allows players to:
* Break blocks
* Use equipped tools
* Attack with equipped weapons
* Draw back ranged weapons (when held)
* Select objects in menu screens, such as the inventory, character inventory, and creative inventory
The secondary interaction key allows players to:
* Place blocks
* Open storage containers
* Open firepit menus
* Eat equipped items (when held)
* Place items in a fruit press
* Remove items from a forge
* Pick up objects on the ground, such as [[stick|sticks]], [[stone|loose stones]], and placed wearable containers
When modified by the Sneak key (or the Shift-click modifier), the secondary interaction key allows players to:
* Place loose stones, flint and obsidian for [[knapping]]
* Place [[clay]] on the ground for [[clay forming]]
* Place items in a forge
* Place wearable containers on the ground
* Extract honeycomb on a placed bowl

Vintage Story primarily uses mouse and keyboard input for controls. All controls listed here are defaults. These can be changed via the in-game settings.

Toggleable options

By default, both of these options are on.

Option Effect
Toggle Sprint On: Sprinting is toggled using the Run key - tap once to enable, and tap again to disable sprinting.
Off: The Run key must be held down to run.
Mouse modifiers locked to Sneak/Sprint On: Mouse actions are modified by the Sneak or Run keys you have bound.
Off: Mouse actions modifiers can be separately bound. These default to Shift (for "sneak-click" actions) and Ctrl (for "sprint-click" actions).

Mouse click modifiers

Only visible if "Mouse modifiers locked to Sneak/Sprint" is set to off.

Key Action
Shift Shift-click. Changing this sets a different modifier key that must be held for any Sneak + Mouse button interaction, typically referred to as "sneak-click".
Ctrl Ctrl-click. Changing this sets a different modifier key that must be held for any Run + Mouse button interaction, typically referred to as "sprint-click" or "run-click".

F Select tool/clayforming mode. Allows players to remove more or less voxels at a time in different tool making modes.

Hotkeys

X Swap left/right hand contents. Swaps items between the equipped hotbar slot and the off-hand slot.

Creative mode

These only apply when playing in creative mode.

F1 -1 fly/move speed
F2 +1 fly/move speed
Shift + F1 -0.1 fly/move speed
Shift + F2 +0.1 fly/move speed
F3 Cycle fly mode. These are no flying, flying, and flying with noclip.
Space + Space Fly mode on/off (double tap)
F4 Show/hide meta blocks
