This page was last verified for Vintage Story version 1.16.4.
Trading is the process by which players can buy and sell items through non-player traders, using rusty gears . A variety of trader types can be found in Vintage Story, each buying and selling different types of items.
Locating Traders
Traders naturally spawn at random locations on the surface of survival worlds and can be found in trader's carts which are made out of wooden planks, logs, and often decorated with a variety of other decorative blocks exclusive to these carts, like leather blocks. However, trader carts cannot be modified because they are claimed.
Traders do not spawn in Homo Sapiens mode, a game mode added in version 1.18.0.
Interacting with Traders
Transactions
Upon finding a trader, players may enter his cart or stand at the gate. To open the trading GUI, talk to the trader. A trading window will appear that includes the items the trader is buying or selling. To buy items, select them from the selling side of the GUI and it will appear in the "trade" slots. To sell items, move the desired items from player inventory and place these into the slots. Upon completing the transaction, rusty gears will be automatically added or removed from player inventory.
Traders offer different numbers of items for buying and selling (see each individual trader, below, for exact amounts). These items may come in stacks. As seen in the image, the player may buy a stack of 4 metal parts. Traders also have a stock for each offered item which limits the number of times an item may be bought or sold. When the stock has been depleted a large red cross appears over the item, signaling the item may not be bought or sold any more. Also, traders have a limited number of gears to give when buying from the player.
Hostility
- If a trader takes damage from any source, he might attack the player.
- If the player succeeds in killing a trader, his wagon and goods will remain protected by the land claim. He will re-appear 24-72 game-hours later.
Types of Traders
From trading with these individuals allows players to obtain items and decorative blocks that cannot be crafted or acquired by any other means. There are nine types of traders, each specialize in buying and selling specific kinds of goods: artisan, building materials, clothing, commodities, foods, furniture, luxuries, survival goods, and treasure hunter. The Treasure Hunter Trader has a dialog option that other Traders do not. This can lead you to special locations, unique items, and extra challenges.

to reveal details.
To find out the location of the Resonance Archives , you will need to ask a Treasure Hunter Trader about "interesting places." If you talk to him again with a full-durability tin bronze pickaxe in your inventory, he will offer you a map item. This is different from the maps you can purchase with rusty gears.
History
- Prior to version 1.16.x, Agriculture Traders were known as "Foods" traders.
- As of version 1.18.10, Trader wagons may be spotted on the map in bird's-eye view.
- Between version 1.16 and 1.19, prices changed for some items.
The Treasure Hunter Trader
- raised the cost of blackguard armor
- reduced the quantity of bronze tools in stock
- increased the price offered for a wolf pup and reinforced shield
