Pigment
From Vintage Story Wiki
Pigments are items that can be used to mark parchments, labeled crates, signs, labeled chests, plaques and signposts. Different items produce different colors of pigment. They can be used also to draw symbols on walls.
Usage
To write using a pigment, equip the item and write by Shift + right clicking the item. A box with a text field should open, allowing players to write and edit text on the sign or chest label.
