Reeds are a type of plant in Vintage Story, which can be harvested using a knife. Reeds are used in many crafting recipes, and are critical in the early game for inventory expansion and early container creation. Two variants of reeds exist, cooper's reeds and papyrus, which are found in temperate and warm climates respectively.

Obtaining

Cooper's reeds grow in or near shallow bodies of water, in temperate climates. Papyrus reeds grow in the same environment, in warm biomes. Cattail and papyrus tops can be harvested by breaking the tops of the plants. If the tops are harvested using an equipped knife, they will regrow. Harvesting with a knife is also faster. The bottoms of the reeds can be broken for either a cattail or a papyrus root, depending on the plant.

Reeds can be grown by planting a root in soil or muddy gravel, next to water or up to one block under water. Since one plant will only ever produce one root, reeds cannot truly be multiplied, only moved around.

A note on names: The game calls the green reed plant "cooper's reeds" in-game, but calls them "cattails" in the handbook. When broken, the "cooper's reed" drops "cattail tops" and "cattail roots". They are the same plant.

Usage

Cattail reeds and papyrus can be used interchangeably.

Cattail and papyrus roots can be eaten after being cooked in a firepit, providing 100 vegetable satiety.

Reeds are a vital early game resource, used to create early-game backpacks such as the hand basket and hunter's backpack. It can also be used to make the reed basket, an early standing storage container with 8 slots.

Throughout the game, reeds are needed to create healing poultices, and skeps for beekeeping. Reeds are also used for the throwable beenade item.
