A temporal rift, spawned in a survival game.

Temporal rifts are a phenomenon that spawns drifters on the surface, as part of the temporal stability mechanic. They were introduced to the game in Vintage Story version 1.16.

Creation

Temporal rifts are randomly generated in areas of temporal instability. More unstable areas are more likely to spawn rifts. Rifts cannot currently be destroyed or interacted with, and will disappear on their own after a few days.

Configuration

Temporal rifts can be configured either during world generation, or afterwards using the World Configuration command /worldconfig temporalRifts [off|invisible|visible]. By default, they are set to visible.

off: Disables temporal rifts. Drifters may still spawn in low-light conditions on the surface.
invisible: Keeps temporal rifts, but disables their stability-drain effect on the player, and all visual and sound effects. This allows surface drifters to spawn but stops temporal rifts from showing up.
visible: Shows temporal rifts and allows drifters to spawn near them.

Effects

Temporal rifts also allow drifters to spawn on the surface in a 25-block radius of the rift. If players get too close to them, they will rapidly lose temporal stability.

Known bugs

  • In version 1.16.5, setting temporal rifts to "off" does not disable surface drifter spawn.
