The Bloomery is a functional block that can be used in the advanced stages of the game for melting materials such as glass and metals like iron that require very high temperatures, which cannot be obtained using the firepit.
Creation
The complete bloomery consists of two blocks: the base and the chimney. Crafting both blocks requires a total of 12 fire bricks and is completed in the crafting grid. The grid crafting recipes:
Once these two blocks are crafted, place the base on a solid surface, then place the chimney on the top of the base to complete the bloomery. A complete bloomery is shown at right.
Usage/Operation
Smelting items in the bloomery requires fuel (coal or charcoal) and the desired item to process (iron ore nuggets, quartz chunks). The bloomery holds enough ore nuggets to generate a maximum of 6 iron ingots (120 X 5 unit nuggets) or 12 glass blocks (24 quartz; 2 chunks = 1 glass) and 20 fuel items. The bloomery does not have to be completely filled (to maximum capacity) to fire it, but both the ores to be smelted and the fuel to complete the smelting process must be added to start the process. The Bloomery does not have a GUI. A player may read the description of the items currently in the bloomery by aiming the white crosshairs at the base block. The interface window will display currently loaded contents (Circled in Red).
- Loading the bloomery: Aim white crosshairs at the bloomery base and right click with the desired (fuel or ore) item in the active hand. Holding shift and right click will allow a player to place multiples of 5 items into the bloomery base.
- Firing the bloomery: To ignite the bloomery and begin smelting, press Left Shift to sneak + right click on the base with a Torch. After a few seconds smoke particles begin to rise from the chimney, and the hole in the base block will be illuminated.
- Harvesting the bloomery: Once the smelting process is complete (about 10 in-game hours), break the bloomery blocks to gather the processed ingots or glass blocks. Breaking the bloomery does not require a tool and will also return some fire bricks used in crafting the bloomery.
Note: players will not recover all the fire bricks used to create the bloomery. To repeat this process and smelt more material, additional fire bricks must be crafted and fired to create new bloomery blocks.
Storage
Bloomery blocks can be prepared and stored in stationary containers, but once placed in the world, cannot be picked up intact. Breaking any placed bloomery block, whether used for a firing process or not, will return only a portion of the bricks used to craft the blocks.
