Building

From Vintage Story Wiki

In Vintage Story, block placement and building work similarly to other games in the voxel-building genre. However, there are a few original mechanics to keep in mind.

Blocks with an orientation, such as slabs and stairs, can be re-oriented depending on how they are placed in the world. Slab blocks also have a placement mode.

Blocks can also be chiseled. using a chisel on a block will turn it into a chiseled block.

For unique, material-specific properties of blocks and slabs, see the appropriate material page (e.g. Glass)

Slab Blocks

Slab blocks in player's inventory have a "Placement Mode" associated with them. There are three modes of placement:

  • Auto mode means that a placed slab can be horizontally placed or vertically placed
  • Only Horizontal mode forces placed slabs to be only horizontally placed
  • Only Vertical mode forces placed slabs to be vertically placed

Newly-created slabs and slabs that have been broken and collected default to "Auto" mode.

To change modes, place the slab in the crafting grid. This will cycle slabs through "Auto" "Horizontal Only" and "Vertical Only" modes in order.

Stair Blocks

Stair Blocks can be placed in two orientations--either in a "normal" stair pattern or upside-down. Placing the block on the floor or bottom half of another block will cause it to be a "normal" stair block, while placing it on a ceiling or top-half of a wall will cause it to be placed upside-down.

Chiseled Blocks

using a Chisel on a block that can be chiseled will cause it to become a Chiseled block. Chiseled blocks cannot be reoriented by collecting and placing them. They can only be reoriented only with the available chisel modes.
