Zinc's ore is called sphalerite, and can be found at relatively shallow depths. Sphalerite cannot spawn on the surface. Sphalerite deposits may be found in nearly any rock layer except for bauxite.

Zinc's ore is called sphalerite, and can be found at relatively shallow depths. Sphalerite nuggets cannot generate on the surface.  
 
Zinc's texture is nearly invisible on some rock colors, especially granite.  It's possible to view and even mine a block of zinc-bearing rock without realizing it at first.
 
In the following table, the "Texture variants" images were taken in full sunlight at noon.  The area on the left of each strip is plain rock, to better compare with the zinc-textured rock that follows.
