Cattails are a very important early game item. It can be used to craft hand baskets to increase your inventory, as well as stationary baskets that can be placed and used as item storage.
To harvest reeds you can break them with your hands, although this destroys the roots. To preserve the roots and allow multiple harvests use a knife.
