Turnips are a source of food. Turnip crops mature faster than most other crops.

Obtaining

Small patches of turnip crops can be found while exploring, in areas with the following temperature , precipitation , and forestation .

Parameter Min. value Max. value
Temperature 1 26
Rainfall 0.38 0.75
Forest 0 0.65

Chunks meeting these conditions have a 3% likelihood of generating 0-10 turnip crops, which might include a mix of mature and immature crops.

Surface ruins and underground ruins usually contain 1 or more cracked loot vessels, which might contain crop seeds. 5-7 turnip seeds can sometimes be found in a Cracked vessel (Seed) .

Turnips and turnip seeds cannot be purchased from any traders .

Cultivation

Mature turnips

Turnip crops tolerate temperatures -5 to 27°C, but only grow when above 0°C. If the temperature drops below -5°C or exceeds 27°C, the turnip crop will become “stunted” and begin to accumulate damage. Stunted turnip crops will yield 50% of normal when harvested.

Turnip crops consume 30 N (nitrogen) over 5 stages of growth. During stages 2-4, turnip crops feed bees and butterflies . Turnip crops take 1 month to mature, assuming a growth rate near 100%. Low moisture or nutrient levels can significantly delay maturation.

Each block of mature turnip crops will yield 6-8 turnips and 1-2 seed packets. Harvesting at stage 4 will yield 2-4 turnips, with a 99% chance of getting 1 seed packet. Harvesting before stage 4 has a 0% chance of getting any turnips, and a 70% chance of getting 1 seed packet.

Usage

Turnips may be eaten without cooking and can be used as an advanced cooking ingredient in:

  • Meat Stew (1-2)
  • Vegetable Stew (1-4)
  • Soup (1-3)
  • Porridge (1-2)

Each turnip provides 100 vegetable satiety . Once harvested, turnips may be stored in the inventory or containers . They benefit from storage in a ceramic storage vessel, ideally in a cellar , like other vegetables. Turnips may be further preserved via pickling .

Turnips may be put in a large trough to breed livestock .[1]

History

  • Version 1.16.0 doubled growth times and yields for most crops, with some exceptions.

Notes

  • Jan-Jun, if the temperature is 10-18°C at 4pm, it’s good for planting turnip seeds.
  • Turnips are a decent crop to focus on for a balanced diet . They cannot tolerate heat, and they use the same nutrient as most grains, but compost is reasonably easy to obtain in quantity.
  • Due to their fast growth and slow spoilage, turnips make good feed for domesticated boars and sheep .
