There 17 variations of soil to be found in the game.
Grass
Each soil can be grassy, i.e. have a green top surface, aka "grass block". Also a tall grass can appear on it. Grass blocks lacking sunlight turn to barren soil blocks. Grass can spread from grassy blocks into barren ones if climate is right. E.g. ff there is low fertility grass around you, these conditions may be unappropriate for grass to spread into medium fertility blocks.
