There 17 variations of soil to be found in the game.

Soil Types

Five different types of soil exist in the world at different fertility rates: barren, low, medium, compost, and high (called "terra preta"). Each has according starting levels of nutrients: 5%, 25%, 50%, 65%, 80%. Soil retains its fertility levels when dug out and placed elsewhere. You can find flat patches of rich (terra preta) soil in mild and hot areas with enough rainfall, mostly on plains and low hills. Barren soil however can rarely be found in some above ground ruins. Bony soil also exists and may be found buried below ruins. Different types of soil are found in different places in the world and vary based on the climate.

Grass

Each soil can be grassy, i.e. have a green top surface, aka "grass block" or appear as "barren soil". Also tall grass can appear on "grass" blocks. Grass blocks lacking sunlight turn to barren soil blocks. Grass can spread from grassy blocks onto barren soil blocks if the climate allows. E.g. If there is grass growing on low fertility grass soil blocks, the conditions may be inappropriate for grass to spread onto medium fertility blocks.
