Depuis la version 1.9, chaque minerai apparait seulement dans certains types de {{ll|rock|roches}}. De nombreux minerais n'apparaissent que dans une roche spécifique, et suivant la roche dépositaire, le minerai peut être présent qualité variable. Appuyer sur les touches <code>s'accroupir + H</code> en regardant une roche ouvrira le manuel et montrera tous les minerais que la roche peut potentiellement contenir.

Ores always generate in disc-shaped deposits, except for child deposits such as sylvite, gold and silver. Some ores have wider or thicker discs than others. Most discs average 5.5 blocks wide, though quartz discs are larger.

The overall shape of the ore disc reflects the surface above and will always cover the same horizontal area. This means that regions with flat ground will have flat ore discs, and where the surface is jagged, the discs will be tilted and distorted. Thus, in flat areas, mining horizontally reduces the chances of finding an ore disc. This continues to be true until the surface is jagged enough that its slope is greater than the width of the ore disc.

La présence de minerais en profondeur n'est pas signalée par des pierres en surface. La plupart du temps, leur découverte est le fruit du hasard, ou bien d'un long travail de prospection à la {{ll|Prospecting_Pick|pioche de prospecteur}}. Certains minéraux comme le salpêtre ne sont pas détectable par prospection et seule l'exploration de cavernes sera efficace. La {{ll|Halite|halite}} peut se trouver sous deux formes : un dôme de sel, ou le lit d'un lac asséché.

Les '''dômes de sel''' peuvent apparaître n'importe où, mais leur sommet doit se situer dans une strate sédimentaire. Une région n'ayant pas de roches sédimentaires ne pourra donc pas avoir un dôme de halite. Lorsque la pioche de prospecteur détecte de la halite en mode "Densité", les chiffres concernent uniquement un éventuel dôme de sel.

Les '''lits de lacs asséchés''' n'apparaissent que dans la couche supérieure de roches sédimentaires, dans les milieux désertiques. Dans les conditions par défaut, avec une zone d'apparition en milieu tempéré, il faut compter voyager 13k+ blocs vers le sud avant de trouver des vrais déserts chauds. Les landes caillouteuse et déserts de graviers des zones tempérées ne sont pas assez chauds. Le lac asséché sera généré directement sur la couche rocheuse, mais en dessous d'éventuelles couches de gravier ou de sable. Il faudra donc creuser un minimum pour les découvrir. Ces lacs asséchés, certes plus faciles d'accès qu'un dôme salin, ''n'apparaitront cependant pas'' dans les données d’échantillonnage obtenues avec la pioche de prospecteur en mode "Densité". Ils sont plus faciles à repérer lorsqu'un effondrement de terrain crée une falaise les mettant à nu, mais les lacs sont créés dans des zones relativement plates et peu accidentées.

=== Sylvine ===

La sylvine sert à créer de la {{ll|potash|potasse}}, un {{ll|Farming#Fertilizer|engrais}} qui non seulement restaure les nutriments K, mais peut également augmenter de manière permanente le maximum de nutriments K d'un bloc de terre cultivée. La sylvite apparait uniquement dans les gisements de halite.
