Obtaining

All grains can be found growing as wild crops, dependent on climate. To find rice, amaranth, and sunflower, the player will likely need to travel far south of the default Temperate spawn. Flax generates in Temperate areas as well as Warm spawns.

Small patches of grain crops can be found while exploring, in areas with the following temperature, precipitation, and forestation.

Worldgen conditions for grain
Grain MinTemp MaxTemp MinRain MaxRain MinForest MaxForest
Flax   3 31 0.35 0.75 0 0.5
Rice   22 40 0.5 1 0 0.5
Rye   -10 14 0.35 0.75 0 0.5
Spelt   3 26 0.38 0.75 0 0.5
Amaranth   17 42 0.35 0.8 0.1 0.4
Sunflower   15 36 0.3 0.65 0 0.3
Cassava   23 48 0.2 0.6 0.1 0.4

Chunks meeting these conditions have a 9% likelihood of generating 0-10 flax crops[1],
3.6% likelihood of 0-10 rice crops,
3.6% likelihood of 0-10 rye crops,
3.6% likelihood of 0-10 spelt crops,
6% likelihood of 0-10 sunflower crops,
7% likelihood of 3-9 amaranth crops, and
7% likelihood of 1-7 cassava crops, respectively.
These might include a mix of mature and immature crops.

Flax seeds may be purchased from agriculture traders.

They can also be found in cracked storage vessels .

Cultivation

All grains may be grown as crops by farming .
Rye is least likely to die in a cold snap.
Sunflower ripens fastest; rice takes the longest.
Most grain crops consume nitrogen (N) from the soil; flax and rice consume potassium (K).
Amaranth consumes relatively little nitrogen (N) from the soil.

Usage

Food

  • Grain may be eaten without cooking. Rice provides the most satiety, while flax provides the least.
  • Grain may be cooked to create a meal that gives higher satiety and pauses hunger. Porridge requires at least 2 matching grain items, in a cooking pot.
  • Grain may be ground in a quern to make flour.
    • Flour may be crafted with water to create dough, which may be baked into bread or pies using a clay oven .
    • Most types of flour may be fermented to make ale, and further distilled to make whisky. Twice-distilled alcohol may be used to craft alcohol-soaked bandages , for significant healing.

Animal Husbandry

Grain can also be used as animal feed in both large and small troughs . Because of their long shelf-life, grains make very good animal feed. Flax grain is especially well-suited to this due to its lower satiety compared to other grains, since animal feed does not take satiety into account.

Fiber

When flax is harvested, it also drops flax fibers , which are used to create flax twine and linen .

  Protip:
Focus early on growing flax. To automate processes such as grinding flour, you'll want a lot of linen for windmills.

Preservation

The grains have some of the longest shelf lives of any food items at 90 in-game days. Storage vessels are best at storing grain and when used in a cellar , grain can last for multiple years.

History

  • Version 1.16.0 doubled growth times and yields for most crops, with some exceptions.
