Stationary Containers

Stationary containers can be transported when empty like any other block. They have to be placed to be filled and are then left in place. They cannot be transported with items inside. Stationary containers including baskets, chests, and shelves are crafted using the grid crafting mechanic. Pottery containers are crafted using the clay forming mechanic.

Grid Basket.pngBasket - A basket is made from 24 cattails and has 8 slots.
Grid Chest.pngChest - A chest is made from 8 planks and has 16 slots.
Grid Tool rack.pngTool rack - A tool rack is made from 6 sticks and has spaces for 4 tools.
[[]]Shelf - A shelf is made from planks and sticks and holds 8 fired clay items including crucibles, food crocks, and bowls.
Flower pot.pngFlower Pot - A flower pot is made from 5 clay and holds 1 flower or sapling.
Clayplanter.pngPlanters - A planter is made from 18 clay and holds 1 flower or sapling.

Some items such as metal ingots, planks, peat bricks, & firewood do not need to be stored in containers because they can be "stacked" on solid blocks. Fired Clay items (molds, bowls, pots) may be placed (Shift + Right Click) to store on solid blocks.

Food Storage Containers

Most food storage containers fall into the class of stationary containers and can only be transported when empty. They must be placed to be filled. Most food storage containers cannot be transported with items inside, with the exception of the Crock. Barrels are crafted using the grid crafting mechanic. Pottery containers are crafted using the clay forming mechanic.

Crock.pngCrock (transportable) - Pottery vessel that holds 4 meal portions, but may also be used to store cooked foods. The crock may be used to transport food items in a player's inventory, stored in stationary containers, placed on sold blocks and shelves.
[[]]Storage Vessel (Stationary) - Pottery vessel with 12 slots for items.
[[]]Barrel (Stationary) - Crafted using planks and sticks. A barrel holds a full stack of ONE type of item, and is used in processing as well as storage. Barrels are a special case container, because once filled and sealed, they cannot be moved until the process taking place inside the container is complete.

Portable Containers

Portable containers add additional player inventory slots. To expand your inventory, place containers in the four container slots located on the right side of the hotbar slots, and include basket shadows. The additional inventory slots provided by each container will appear to the left of the crafting grid in the order in which the containers are placed in the container slots. You can place different types of portable containers in different container slots. Filled skeps are also transported in container slots. (See beekeeping for information on transporting filled skeps.)

When you remove a container from the container slots on the hotbar, the contents will be lost. Be sure to remove the contents from the container before you remove the container. Portable containers are crated using the grid crafting mechanic.
