3. Select the recipe, and you will see the clay forming grid appear. To craft the chosen mold or item, you must fill (right mouse click) all the green marked voxels to place clay and remove (left mouse click) any clay blocks outside of the grid, which are marked orange. It's helpful to press 'G' to sit on the ground while crafting with clay molds. Also, you can press 'F' while crafting to access the tool menu that will allow you to change your "brush size" and place more or less blocks at a time (1x1, 2x2 and 3x3) with each click. The last option in the tool menu 'Copy' also allows you to quickly duplicate layers of clay. As you complete each layer of the clay item, the next layer will appear for you to complete.

Clay forming is a crafting method that allows the player to place and layer tiny cubes (voxels) of clay to form a shaped container, which is then fired or "burned" in a firepit to finish the item. The forming mechanic is similar to knapping stone tools, where voxels must be added or removed to create the desired object.

Required Materials

To form clay items you need: blue clay or fireclay, a firepit, and fuel.

Acquiring Clay

Clay deposits are commonly found in temperate climates and can be harvested with bare hands or a shovel. There are different types of clay in the world, blue clay and fire clay. For tool molds and items like bowls and pots you can use any kind of clay, but the bloomery must be built with fire clay bricks.

Shaping Molds and Items

1. Select clay in your active hand. (blue clay is shown left and fire clay is shown right)

3. The clay forming grid will appear on the surface you selected. To craft the chosen mold or item, you must fill all the 'green' colored voxels using (right mouse button) to place clay and remove clay from any 'orange' colored voxels using (left mouse button) to create the form. As you complete each layer of the clay item, the next layer will appear for you to complete. It's helpful to sit on the ground (press 'G') while shaping clay.

4. When all layers of the item or mold are completed, the dialog box will disappear and the formed items will jump into the inventory of the player who placed or removed the last voxel of clay. If you need to place an item on a surface before firing, you can do so and "break" the item to pick it up.

Tool Modes

To change the number of clay voxels added or removed (1x1, 2x2 and 3x3), press F and select the 'brush size' as indicated by the first three menu options. The last tool menu option,'Copy' allows you to duplicate identical layers of clay voxels. When this menu option is selected, pressing the right mouse button adds a "layer" of clay matching the pattern of voxels directly underneath the current layer under construction.

Preparing Items and Molds

Once the form is complete, the clay item must be baked in a firepit. Place the raw clay item into the top left slot of the firepit, and add fuel to the bottom slot. The fuel selected to fire (burn) blue clay items must reach and maintain the firing temperature of 700 C until the process is completed. When fired, the finished item will transfer to the right side (output) of the firepit. Burned items turn into a dark color and have "burned" added to their name. Baked items can be placed on the ground via Shift + Right click, and many pottery items can be picked up again using right click when your hand is empty.
