Building a Charcoal Pit
Charcoal is made by burning firewood in an enclosed, air-free space. The volume of firewood blocks must be no more than 11 blocks in any direction, making the largest volume 11³ or 1,331 blocks.

# Create an airtight shell by enclosing the stacks in dirt blocks or any non-combustible block, but leave one block on top of the pit open.
# Build a firepit directly on top of the stack of accessible firewood at the top of the pit.
# Quickly seal the pit by placing one block on top of the fire pit. (Players have 30 seconds to seal the shell or the process will not work)

# When the pile stops smoking (18 game hours), the process is complete.
# Remove the shell and collect the charcoal using bare hands or a shovel

Start by placing firewood down, the volume does not have to be enclosed in dirt blocks, any non-combustible block will work. After the firewood is enclosed, making sure there are no empty blocks, place a fire pit directly on top of the firewood then enclose that. If done successfully the pile will create smoke particles, indicating that it's working.
Dimensions and Considerations
If the charcoal pile is not sealed within 30 seconds of ignition, charcoal will not be produced and the firewood will burn to ash.
The maximum size of any charcoal pit extends 11 blocks in any direction. The largest volume of material that can be processed in one pit is therefore 11³ or 1,331 blocks.

Careful: After the firepit is placed you have 30 seconds to completely cover up the pit, otherwise your firewood will burn down to ash and not yield any charcoal, thus it is recommended to have all sides covered before placing the fire pit.
Usage
Charcoal is the first type of fuel capable of generating temperatures high enough (1300°C) to smelt metal ores such as Copper (1084°C)
Charcoal can also be used as the (Carbon Black) pigment, to label chests and signs.

After 18 in-game hours, the pile will stop smoking. This means the charcoal is done, and you can break open the shell and dig up the goodies, either by hand or with a shovel.
Storage
Charcoal may be carried in player inventory, or stored in containers.

Usage
Charcoal is the first type of fuel you can obtain that is capable of generating temperatures high enough to smelt metal ores. Copper smelts at 1084°C and charcoal burns at 1300°C.
It's also the 'Carbon Black' pigment.

Creation

Charcoal is created in charcoal pits, which are chambers or spaces where enclosed stacks of firewood are burned.

Building a Charcoal Pit

 1. Place firewood in stacks.
 2. Create an airtight shell by enclosing the stacks in dirt blocks or any non-combustible block, but leave one block on top of the pit open.
 3. Build a firepit directly on top of the stack of accessible firewood at the top of the pit.
 4. Quickly seal the pit by placing one block on top of the fire pit. (Players have 30 seconds to seal the shell or the process will not work)
 5. The pile will create smoke particles, indicating that the process is taking place.
 6. When the pile stops smoking (18 game hours), the process is complete.
 7. Remove the shell and collect the charcoal using bare hands or a shovel
