Axes are currently used to chop down trees, and to break wood-type blocks quicker. Flint hatchets can be created early in game by knapping flint before metalworking has been established. Metal axes can be cast into molds, or created at an anvil; casted axes require 100 units of liquid metal to create, while forged axes require 200 units of metal.

The raw material used to create the tool head determines the crafting process required:
* Knapping: All tool-making stones
* Casting (100 units): Copper and Bronze alloy
* Smithing (1 ingot): Iron, Bronze alloy, Copper, (Gold and Silver)

After creating an axe head, simply put it on top of a stick to craft the axe. To create a flint axe head, shift+right-click on the ground with two flint items in your hand, and select the flint hatchet head. Then, click all of the highlighted voxels to create a basic flint hatchet head.

*Black bronze axes as of version 1.5.0.1 do not have an attack value listed.
== Usage == <!--T:6-->
The axe is most efficient when used to break wood blocks such as trees, logs, planks, fences, gates and items including wooden building components.

=== Harvesting === <!--T:7-->
Breaking a tree with an axe will break many blocks at once. The targeted block will take a long time to break and when it does break, the tree will break with it. The max number of blocks it breaks is limited to the remaining durability of the axe. Cutting the whole tree at once still applies the same amount of damage to the axe as if each block was broken individually.

=== Crafting ===  <!--T:9-->
Firewood is crafted using the axe. When the axe is being used as a crafting tool, each time the recipe is crafted the tool will lose durability.

==Storage== <!--T:11-->
Tools are items commonly used by players and are generally equipped in the hotbar. Up to four tools can be placed on the tool rack, a specialized wall-mounted storage container. Axes do not stack in inventory or when placed in containers.
