Wild foods can be obtained directly through foraging naturally occurring plants or hunting animals. Wild foods are a critical source of food in the early game, before players have access to farming , cooking meals , or animal husbandry .

Foraging

Different edible plants are found based on the local biome . Most plants can be eaten raw or used as ingredients in meals, while some must be cooked before consumption.

Wild Crops

See Farming

All farmable crops, except for cabbage and pumpkins , can be found growing in the wild. These wild crops go through growing stages just like farmed crops, and can be harvested in the same way to provide seeds and crops. Wild crops grow much more slowly than farmed crops, and if they are left in a mature state for too long, they will eventually revert to their first growth stage.

Some seeds and produce can be purchased from Agriculture traders .

Climate

Some crops can only be found in the wild in regions with higher annual temperatures than default temperate zones. To find wild peanuts, rice, or pineapple, you'd need to either select Warm/Hot for the starting climate, or travel south from the default Temperate climate region. Default polarEquatorDistance is 50000.

Berries

See Berry

Berrybush red currant ripe.png Berry bushes grow in temperate and colder climates, but will stop bearing fruit during the winter. Ripe bushes can be harvested to collect berries. The bushes can be collected by breaking them. Berry bushes cannot be propagated or divided; each bush can only be moved individually. Bushes can be replanted to create berry farms. Their growth is not affected by the quality of soil they are planted on.

Mushrooms

See Mushroom

Grid mushroom bolete.png Mushrooms generate naturally in a variety of climates and regions. Different types of mushrooms have specific growing environments. They can be found growing on the ground, or on the sides of tree trunks. Mushrooms can be harvested with an empty hand, but it is faster to harvest them with a knife . After harvesting, mushrooms will not regrow on the same block, instead naturally spawning in the same areas based on the specific growing requirements there, such as rainfall, temperature, and environment. This allows players to remove or add blocks from the area without preventing mushrooms from regrowing.

Mushrooms only provide 80 vegetable satiety , compared to the 100 satiety of vegetable crops.

Mushroom death cap.png Protip:
Some mushrooms deal HP damage to players when eaten. Some mushrooms, such as the death cap, will kill any player who consumes them. This damage is NOT removed when cooking a meal containing a dangerous mushroom.

Press Shift + H while looking at the mushroom, or hover your cursor over the mushroom in your inventory to check if it's poisonous.

Saguaro fruit

Fruit-saguaro.png Saguaro, or cactus fruit, are naturally generated in arid or desert regions. breaking the cactus block with an empty hand allows players to collect the fruits, but the tops will not regrow. Using a knife , the fruit can be harvested without damaging the cactus and allowing it to regrow. They can also be purchased from Agriculture traders .

Saguaro fruit can be consumed for 60 fruit satiety . They will also restore 1 health when eaten.

Wild vegetables

Vegetable-cookedcattailroot.png The base of reeds , such as cattails or papyrus, can be broken with a knife to collect the root, which can replanted elsewhere, or cooked in a firepit and eaten for 100 vegetable satiety . As the roots do not rot prior to being cooked, they can be stored as an emergency food source.

Vegetable-bambooshoot.png A green or brown bamboo shoot can be crafted with a knife to create two edible bamboo shoots. Each edible bamboo shoot provides 100 satiety, but does not contribute to your nutrition.

Termites

See Termite

Termites.png Termites are a form of insect-based food that can also be foraged from termite nests. Termite nests generate in arid and hot regions. When eaten, termites provide 60 protein satiety .

Hunting

Any animal can be killed and butchered for meat , fat , hides and bones . Use a knife to harvest animal products. When the butchering process is complete, a small window will open to allow players to collect all the animal resources. Once all of the items have been removed from the animal's corpse, it will decay into a carcass which can be broken to obtain the bones.

With the default creatureHostility setting , bears and wolves are aggressive and will attack players who get too close. These creatures are extremely dangerous to unequipped players, capable of killing an unarmored player in only one or two hits, depending on the chosen game mode and creatureDamage setting . Armor , ranged combat , and use of terrain should be used to reduce risk during combat.

Bears are particularly strong and durable, with the common black and brown bears having 44 and 64 health and dealing 10 and 12 damage, respectively, compared to the 15 health* and 8 damage of a wolf; A longbow with copper arrows would require 18 shots to kill a brown bear, so make sure you're prepared before attempting to attack a bear.

Bighorn sheep and wild pigs also retaliate when attacked, but are not as dangerous as predatory animals, dealing only 4-7.5 damage.

Meat types

See Meat

Bushmeat-raw.png Bushmeat is harvested from bears , wolves , foxes , raccoons , and hyenas . It cannot be used in meal recipes, and must be cooked over a firepit before it can be eaten.

Redmeat-raw.png Redmeat is harvested from hares , bighorn sheep , goats , deer , gazelles , moose , elk , and wild pigs . It can be cooked in a firepit or used for more advanced meals .

Redmeat-cooked.png Cooked redmeat can be purchased from Agriculture traders or sold to Treasure Hunter .

Meat can also be cured to give it a vastly extended shelf life.

Fishing

Fish-raw.png While the game does not currently have a dedicated fishing system, salmon can be hunted to obtain raw fish .

Cracked vessels

See Cracked vessel

Small amounts of food can be obtained from cracked vessels found in ruins; Food vessels drop 8 - 15* grain, and forage vessels have a small chance to drop 1 - 3* honeycomb *.
