Steel is a tier 5 alloy composed of iron and carbon. It is refined from blister steel , an intermediate product created by carburizing iron ingots with coal in a cementation furnace.

Steel can be smithed into tools , weapons , armor , and other items. It is the highest tier metal in the game and has the greatest durability, mining speed, attack power, and damage reduction of all craftable equipment.

Creation

See also: Steel making

The steel making process begins in the cementation furnace, a player-built structure made of refractory bricks , an iron door , and a stone coffin. In each firing of the cementation furnace, 16 iron ingots and 40 pieces of a high-quality carbon-bearing material (i.e., charcoal or coke ) are placed inside a coffin and sealed. The furnace is then ignited from the pile of fuel underneath. After approximately 1 week, the coffin can be broken to retrieve 16 ingots of blister steel and leftover carbon material.

Blister steel is refined by heating it in a forge , transferring it to an anvil , and using a hammer to remove the slag and shape it into a steel ingot. The refining process can also be automated with a helve hammer .

Usage

Casting

See also: Casting

Steel has a melting point of 1502°C. While steel can technically be cast into ingot molds , there are currently no fuels that reach the necessary temperature.

Smithing

See also: Smithing

Steel can be smithed into various items. A tier 3 anvil (iron or higher) is required. The workable temperature for steel is 751°C.

Version Description

Notes

  • As with all metals , a steel ingot can be converted into 20 steel bits by combining it with a chisel in the crafting grid. Since steel cannot be cast, however, steel bits are functionally useless.
