The immobilized eidolon is a tall hostile android who has been immobilized because a collapse of the ceiling took place in the room where it was. This creature is the boss of the Resonance Archives dungeon. It is the first boss introduced in Vintage Story.

Combat

Though the immobilized eidolon cannot move its legs, it can still do a great deal of damage. Its health bar is very large (500 hp) so the fight is very long. It has the ability to attack in 3 different manners:

Melee attack

The eidolon strikes the player with his arm. It is a knockback attack.

Damage : 2
Damage tier : 3
Damage type : Slashing attack

Throwing a boulder

The eidolon throws a granite boulder to the player. This happens if the player is not in melee range.

Projectile damage: 8
Damage tier : 2

Slam

The eidolon slams the ground and debris from the ceiling fall on the player. This happens if the player is not in melee range.

Projectile damage: 8
Damage tier : 1

Strategies

The eidolon is the first proper "boss" of the game and as such many players may be more unprepared than they might expect to face it despite previous success in the dungeon preceding the fight. As such, it is important to know of recommended tactics, tips and tricks that a player can use during the fight, specifically in solo play as the eidolon is much more dangerous than it otherwise could be to a group of people.

Gear & Equipment

At the very least you should enter the fight with Tier 2 Armor and proper weaponry. Crude weaponry will not do here, instead bring a longbow or recurve bow, many metal arrows and a metal melee weapon of your choice (Ideally at least Tin Bronze) as well as a proper wood metal shield to block the boulder and melee attacks. Healing items are also a must as the fight is extremely long and the sheer number of attacks it throws out can whittle you down quickly. Honey-Sulfur Poultice with Linen is ideal but can be very expensive, while Horsetail Poultice with Reeds is cheap but doesn't heal much at all and takes a long time to apply. Bandages can also be used but unless you have a jug filled with Aqua Vitae to create Alcohol-Soaked Bandages on the fly it is not recommended as Horsetail Poultice with Reeds is simply less expensive for the same result.

Arena

The arena you fight the eidolon in is quite small and somewhat dark and you may have issues running around the boss comfortably. Thankfully, the arena has a few pillars near the corners of the room that you can hide behind and break line of sight to the eidolon so that it will stop attacking for as long as you are hidden. The safe space the pillars provide is small and you should take care not to accidentally step back into the line of sight of the eidolon or else it will likely use its ranged attacks and possibly fling you out of cover entirely. There are also some piles of rubble in the corners of the arena behind a couple of the pillars that you can use to get some slight height against the boss and pelt with arrows from a relatively safe distance, though this comes with the risk of going back into it's line of sight.

Avoiding Attacks

The eidolon is a much more lethal boss than likely anything else you have encountered in the rest of the dungeon, and it is important to know what to do during specific attacks. The boss is nearly non-stop with it's attacks, rarely leaving any room to breathe unless you manage to break line of sight behind the pillars.

  • Melee Attack: The boss will use this move whenever you are in what it considers melee range (around about 1.5 or 2 blocks) and it is easily it's most dangerous attack, being a Tier 3 attack. It's animation has it winding up the attack to make a big swing and looks somewhat similar to it's animation for throwing a boulder, when you see it prepare this attack immediately put up your shield to block it or else you will take massive damage and knockback. You'll likely have just enough time to get a hit in with your own melee attack before it makes yet another attack.
  • Boulder Throw: The boss has a roughly equal chance to either throw a boulder or slam the ground whenever you are not in melee range and is a mildly dangerous attack, though by all means much more manageable than the melee attack. It's animation has it raising one of it's arms in preparation to throw and can sometimes be confused for a melee attack when viewing the attack at certain angle (especially in the dark). When you see it prepare this attack simply raise your shield like with the melee attack to block the damage, you'll have significantly more time (comparatively) to block the attack than with it's melee and even should you get hit, so long as you are wearing at least Tier 2 Armor the damage you'll take should be manageable.
  • Slam: The boss has a roughly equal chance to either throw a boulder or slam the ground whenever you are not in melee range and is a more annoying attack than anything else. The damage it deals is low compared to it's other attacks, especially since it is only a Tier 1 attack, but can move you out from behind cover or disorient you with the high amount of airtime it gives you once it slams the ground. Avoiding this attack is actually quite easy since it's animation has it raising both of it's arms high into the air ready to pound the ground, making it very easily telegraphed. When you see it prepare this attack simply jump just before it slams the ground and you'll avoid being flung into the air, though you may still need to dodge the falling rocks it creates (which can frankly be ignored as the damage is negligible with at least Tier 2 Armor).

Dealing Damage

With 500 Health and near constant attacks you'll need to find openings to deal damage whenever you can. With your melee weapon of choosing it is generally recommended to attack between each of it's attacks as best you can while constantly weaving in and out of it's melee range or switching between blocking with a shield and attacking with a melee weapon. If you need space to breathe or heal hide behind one of the pillars and get out of it's line of sight before it can use a Slam attack to knock you into the air and away from cover. If you would rather not risk getting into melee range at all then you can use arrows from a distance to damage it while not provoking a melee attack, though this comes with the downside of either needing to quickly swap between a bow and shield to block the boulder attack or not using a shield at all. The rubble behind the pillars in the corners of the room can be used to get a slightly better angle on the boss while retaining some safety as the thrown boulders can sometimes be blocked by the pillar as you weave in and out of line of sight. You'll need to bring many arrows if you wish to use this tactic, specifically around about 100 Tin Bronze Arrows if using a Recurve Bow, more if using a Longbow or Copper Arrows. Additionally, it seems as though the Eidolon has a weak spot in the form of some kind of light blue power source the same color as a Temporal Gear inside it's metal shell but it can be quite difficult to actually hit. You'll know you hit the weak spot when you hear a sonorous metal thud and by seeing its health bar take significantly (relatively) more damage.

Notes

The Eidolon will respawn between 7 and 8 days after being killed.

Origins

The word eidolon comes from ancient greek and can be translated as body double of a human.

This mechanical creature was created either by Jonas Falx or one of his disciples to help people in their everyday tasks.

We do not know why the eidolon and all mechanical creatures turned hostile against their creators.

There exist 2 tapestries representing the schematics of an eidolon that can be found in ruins . One version of this tapestry is tainted with blood, testifying of the violence that occured.

There is a text on the schematics tapestry:
"A mobile colossus for scaffold and hoisting. May they inspire our tired workmen". When they first started moving, the crowds almost panicked and fled. But eventually a cheer went up. Finally we had made something greater than ourselves.
