Grain

From Vintage Story Wiki

This page was last verified for Vintage Story version 1.18.6.

Grain is a category of food in Vintage Story, provided by various grain crops. Different grains have different properties. Although the cassava plant is not grown like other grain crops, its use in cooking and the type of satiety it provides is highly similar to that of grains.

Obtaining

All grains can be found growing as wild crops, depending on climate. Flax generates in temperate as well as warm areas.

Small patches of grain crops can be found while exploring, in areas with the following temperature , precipitation , and forestation :

Worldgen conditions for wild grain
Grain Temperature (°C) Rainfall Forestation Likelihood[1] Amount[1]

Mature cassava Cassava 23 48 0.2 0.6 0.1 0.4 7% 1-7

Wild grain crops, much like other wild crops , are found as a mixture of plants in different growing stages. Grain seeds can also be found in cracked storage vessels , while flax seeds may be purchased from agriculture traders .

Cultivation

All grains may be farmed . Different crops have different tolerances for temperature, ripening speeds, and fertilizer usage. In general, rye is the most cold-tolerant crop while rice is the most heat-tolerant grain. Sunflower is the fastest to grow while rice takes the longest. Most grain crops consume nitrogen (N) from the soil, while flax and rice consume potassium (K). Amaranth uses the least fertilizer relative to other grains.

Usage

Grains are primarily used to feed the player or to feed domesticated animals . Flax is a special case, where it is usually grown for the fiber it provides and the grain is a by-product of the process.

Food

Grains may be eaten raw to provide grain satiety , but cooking the grain is generally more effective. Most grains provide 60 satiety, but rice provides slightly more satiety when cooked, compared to other grains. Flax provides significantly less (30 satiety).

Grains can be turned into meals , specifically porridge or ground into flour at a quern . Flour can then be mixed with water into dough , which can then be baked into bread or pies using a clay oven .

Alcohol

Grains can be fermented into ale , and this ale can be further distilled into spirits.

Animal husbandry

Grain can also be used as animal feed in both large and small troughs . Because of their long shelf-life, grains make very good animal feed. Flax grain is especially well-suited to this due to its lower satiety compared to other grains, since animal feed does not take satiety into account.

Fiber

When flax is harvested, it also drops flax fibers , which are used to create flax twine and linen .

Tip:
Focus early on growing flax. To automate processes such as grinding flour, you'll want a lot of linen for windmills.

Preservation

Grains have some of the longest shelf lives of any food items, at 90 in-game days. Storage vessels are best at storing grain and when used in a cellar , grain can last for multiple years.

History

Version Description
v1.16.0 doubled growth times and yields for most crops, with some exceptions.[2]

Trivia

  • As of version 1.20.12, the satiety values for rice are bugged. While the JSON files for grain state that rice should give 75 satiety, due to an ordering issue, rice only gives 60 satiety (like all other grains aside from flax) in the game.
