Dye
This page was last verified for Vintage Story version 1.20.10.
Dyes are liquids that can be used to change the color of cloth and leather. For a visual demonstration of the process, see the gallery.
Creation
Mordant
- Note: Only cloth can be mordanted. Leather can be dyed with no additional preparation.
Protip:
Woad blue and brown dye can be applied to plain cloth and don't require prior mordanting. However, they do accept mordanted cloth should you choose to use it. |
To fix the colors, the fabric must first be treated with a mordant. There are 3 mordants in the game: Diluted cassiterite, Diluted chromite and Diluted alum, which all function identically. A mordant solution is made instantly in a barrel by adding 1 Crushed cassiterite, 1 Crushed chromite or 1 Crushed alum to 5L of
water. Crushed mordants are created using a pulverizer. You can put the water in the barrel with a wooden bucket.
To create Mordanted cloth, add 1 cloth to the barrel per 2L of diluted mordant and seal it. The mordanting process takes 8 hours.
Color
Dyes are created in a barrel. All dyes require a specific element that determines the color of the dye. Some dyes can be obtained in more than one way. Note that the ratio of solids to liquids varies. Creating dye takes 8 hours, except for strong tannin which requires 24 hours.

Usage
To dye cloth or leather, place it in the barrel containing the dye and seal the barrel for 8 hours. Each piece of cloth requires 2L of dye, and each piece of leather requires 5L of dye.
Dyed cloth is used to create specific types of clothing. Colored leather is used for clothing and ornate shields.
