Copper is a tier 2 metal . It is generally the first metal available to players at the start of the game. Copper can be cast and smithed into a variety of tools , weapons , armor , and other items. It is also a component in several alloys.

Obtaining

Ores

There are two types of copper-containing ores : malachite and native copper.

Native copper can be found in nearly all rock layers: chalk, chert, claystone, conglomerate, sandstone, shale, phyllite, slate, andesite, basalt, granite, and peridotite. It is both a shallow ore, with a high chance of generating loose stones on the surface, and deep ore , which does not generate loose stones.[1]

  • Shallow native copper deposits generate at an elevation between 0.935 and 0.995 of the surface. The height of the surface varies across different terrain, and is estimated to be Y = 120 on average in a world with default height settings. Shallow native copper can range from Y= 112 to Y = 119. The deposit is disc-shaped with a radius of 3-6 blocks and a thickness of 1 block. It has 0.2 tries per chunk to generate, making it very rare.
  • Deep native copper deposits generate at an elevation between 0 and 0.6 of the surface. In a world with default height settings, this can range from Y = 0 to Y= 72. The deposit is disc-shaped with a radius of 4-10 blocks and a thickness of 3 blocks. It has 25 tries per chunk to generate, making it common.

Malachite can be found in the remaining rock layers: limestone and marble. It is a shallow ore and has a high chance of generating loose stones on the surface.[2]

  • Malachite deposits generate at an elevation between 0 and 0.94 of the surface. In a world with default height settings, this can range from Y = 0 to Y = 112. The deposit is disc-shaped with a radius of 4-10 blocks and a thickness of 1 block. It has 10 tries per chunk to generate, making it somewhat common. It also receives a depth bonus, meaning that ores have a chance to be 1 grade higher at lower elevations (0% chance at surface level, 100% chance at Y = 0).[3]

Altogether, copper ores can generate in any rock layer except for kimberlite.

A tier 2 pickaxe (copper or higher) or an ore blasting bomb is required to mine copper ores. These drop ore chunks , which must be smashed with a hammer to turn them into usable nuggets. Without tools, only surface bits can be picked up for 1-3 nuggets each.

Panning

There is a 15% chance (1 in 6.67) of obtaining 1 native copper nugget when panning in sand or gravel .

Other

16 native copper nuggets can be purchased from the commodities trader for 1 to 3 rusty gears . While in stock, this trade can be performed 3 to 5 times per reset.

Cracked vessels (ore) found in ruins have a 14.49% chance to drop 2-8 native copper nuggets.

Usage

To process copper nuggets, they must be smelted in a crucible over a firepit using a high-temperature fuel , such as charcoal . Crucibles and molds are made through clay forming , which requires a source of clay , dry grass , and sticks .

Molten copper can be poured directly into molds for various items such as tools , weapons , and ingots.

Smithing

A copper ingot can be heated in a forge and smithed on an anvil using a hammer into various items. Some of these items cannot be made through casting, such as copper plates .

Smithed copper items can be used in most crafting recipes that allow multiple types of metals. The following recipes are made exclusively of copper:

Alloys

Copper and other metal nuggets can be smelted together in a specific ratio to create alloys . Copper is the primary component of bronze , a tier 3 metal. It is also a component of brass , molybdochalkos , and cupronickel .

Progression

Copper is generally the first metal players will be able to use, due to its abundance and ease of smelting. Copper equipment and items allow players to mine rock and ores, create saws for advanced carpentry, and create effective weapons and armor. Because copper opens up many new abilities for players, gaining the ability to work with copper is referred to as "starting the Copper Age".

A pickaxe and hammer are the minimum tools required for effective mining (as opposed to panning or picking up surface bits). So, players will need to obtain 40 copper nuggets in total to properly enter the Copper Age. Additionally, copper anvils are only capable of smithing as high as tier 3 metals, which encompass all types of bronze. In order to progress further and into the Iron Age, players must fully master the use of bronze tools.

1.10 rc.1 The size of surface copper deposits was reduced while maintaining the previous amount of bits.
1.12.5 rc.1 Increased the frequency of surface copper deposits by 20% in Standard mode and 100% in Exploration and Wilderness Survival modes.
1.13 rc.2 Surface copper no longer spawns at rich ore grade, except in basalt.
