A reinforced wooden crate trap can catch larger animals than a reed basket trap , but it is still too small for many adult animals and large enough to discourage smaller animals from approaching it.

Usage

Place the basket trap on the ground, then bait it with an appropriate food item. Make sure to keep your distance from the trap to avoid alarming your target. When the trap triggers, its lid will close. When this happens there will be a chance to trap the animal or destroy the trap based on the animals age and species. To pick up and carry the crate trap, Right mouse button it: you will need one of your four backpack slots free for this. To release the carried animal, select the crate (use hotkey Ctrl + <backpack slot number 1, 2, 3, or 4 > depending on which backpack slot it is in). Right mouse button on the spot where you want it released.

Be aware that an animal, once trapped, will die if left in the trap for too long; normally 24 hours - if it dies you will get its corpse though. If you release and re-trap the animal, the death timer only resets if the animal was released and free for at least the same amount of time that it was already in the trap.

In-game Handbook entry

Reinforced wooden crate trap
"How to Use
A wood crate trap will catch larger animals than a basket trap, but is still too small to catch many adult animals. The bait is held high at the back of the cavity, so many smaller animals that will enter a basket trap, will not be attracted to this trap, since they cannot reach the bait. Since the rope is tied to the bait, tiny baits like grains cannot be used with the crate trap.

To pick up and carry the crate trap, Right mouse button it: you will need one of your four backpack slots free for this. To release the carried animal, select the crate (use hotkey Ctrl + 1, 2, 3, or 4 depending on which backpack slot it is in). Right mouse button on the spot where you want it released.

Be aware that an animal, once trapped, will die if left in the trap for too long; normally 24 hours - if it dies you will get its corpse though. If you release and re-trap the animal, the death timer only resets if the animal was released and free for at least the same amount of time that it was already in the trap."
