Trading is the process by which players can buy and sell items through non-player traders using the currency of rusty gears . Trading allows players to obtain items and blocks that cannot be crafted or acquired by any other means, and provides a renewable source of certain rare or otherwise non-renewable resources.
Locating Traders
Traders naturally spawn at random locations on the surface of the world. They are found in wooden carts which are often decorated with a variety of other blocks, including some exclusive to these carts such as leather blocks. Trader carts are claimed by the trader; they cannot be broken or modified. However, beds, chests, resonators, and similar blocks may be used freely.
Traders do not spawn in Homo Sapiens mode, a game mode added in version 1.18.0 which removes all story content.
Interacting with Traders
Transactions
To open the trading GUI,
talk to the trader. A trading window will appear that shows the items the trader is buying and selling. To buy items, select them from the "You can buy" side of the GUI on the left and they will appear in the trade slots below. To sell items, move them from your inventory into the slots on the bottom right. Upon completing the transaction, rusty gears will automatically be added to or removed from your inventory.
You may not perform a trade that would cause either party to have less than 0 gears. For example, you may not attempt to sell an item for 4 gears if the trader only has 3. However, you may perform a two-way trade that would break this rule if the final result is acceptable. For example, if you and the trader each have 2 gears, you could sell an item worth 3 gears while purchasing an item worth 5 gears at the same time, despite both transactions being impossible individually.
An item up for trade may have an associated stack size. As seen in the image, the player may sell a stack of 8 bread for the price shown when it is selected. Traders have a limited stock for each available trade. When the stock has been depleted, a large red cross appears over the item, signaling the item may not be bought or sold any more until the next delivery. The time until the next delivery is indicated at the top of the trading window. At the time of a new delivery, they may gain gears or lose up to 3 gears.
Some items are both purchased and sold by different traders at advantageous prices, allowing the player to buy and sell the same item to different traders to profit. For example, you could purchase a Copper lantern from a Furniture trader for 4 gears, then sell it to a Building materials trader for up to 7 gears, potentially gaining 3 gears at the cost of travel. This can also be done indirectly, such as purchasing cassiterite nuggets from a Commodities trader in order to produce tin bronze tools or lanterns to sell.
Some items have restrictions that determine whether or not they are fit for sale. Tools must be 95% or higher durability, rounded up, and food must be at least 50% fresh to be sold. If the item does not meet these criteria, you will be unable to place the item into a trading slot.
An example of a stacked trade; 5 stacks of 8
Rye bread can be sold for 1 gear each.
Hostility
Traders may become hostile if they take damage near the player. Killing the trader does not remove the protections on his cart, and he will respawn at his cart in 24-72 hours.
Types of Traders
There are nine types of traders, each providing a different set of goods for sale and purchase. The following tables show the prices, quantities, and available stock for each possible trade.
Agriculture
Agriculture traders sell several kinds of foods, including Saguaro fruit. They are a useful source of bee products if the player has not found them in the wild, redwood, a rare tree type with very low seed drop chances, and cheese, an exceptionally long-lived food that provides dairy nutrition without the long process of animal husbandry .
They have 16 - 24* gears. They have up to 10 items for sale and purchase.

Survival Goods
Survival Goods traders sell items that can be very helpful for players struggling to survive. They allow non-Hunter players to obtain the highly accurate recurve bow and purchase many items that are easy to produce. The wolf pup can be resold for a significant profit. It does not grow into an adult if kept in the inventory, but if released will eventually become a hostile adult.
They have 20 - 30* gears. They have up to 14 items for sale and purchase.

Treasure Hunter
This page was last verified for Vintage Story version 1.20.10.
Treasure Hunter traders sell temporal gears, as well as items that are usually only found in loot chests, such as lore scrolls, and the unique Blackguard armor set. The cracked vessels can be broken to obtain their potentially rare contents, such as soybean or pumpkin seeds, or resold to a Commodities trader for a hefty profit. Like the survival goods trader, the treasure hunter buys many goods that are easy to produce.
They have 20 - 30* gears. They have up to 14 items for sale and purchase.

To learn the location of the Resonance Archives , you will need to ask a treasure hunter about "interesting places." If you talk to him again with a tin bronze pickaxe of at least 95% durability* in your inventory, he will offer you a map which, when
used, will mark the approximate location of the archives on your map. This is different from the Treasure maps which are sold normally.
