Reed basket traps are used to capture and move small animals for food or breeding. For moving domesticated animals of generation 5 or higher, use a reed chest instead.
Crafting
A reed basket trap is crafted with a reed chest and a stick in the crafting grid.

Usage
Place the basket trap on the ground, then
bait it with an appropriate food item. Make sure to keep your distance from the trap to avoid alarming your target. When the trap triggers, it turns back into a normal reed chest and has a chance to trap the animal based on its species and age. It can then be
picked up. A chest holding an animal requires an empty backpack slot. The animal can then be released elsewhere by scrolling to the backpack slot Ctrl +
or selecting it Ctrl + <backpack slot number> and
using the chest while looking at a block.
A useful strategy for capturing animals quickly is to place and bait traps away from them, then scare them towards the traps.
Tip:
Remember to unequip a bag for each trapped animal you plan to bring home! |
The animal will die after being held in the chest for 24 hours. This timer does not instantly reset after releasing the animal. Instead, the animal will recover at twice the speed. For example, an animal held for 4 hours before being placed will need 2 hours to fully recover the 24 hour timer. If the animal died before being released, the body can still be harvested with a knife.

Animals and bait
A reed basket trap can hold only one piece of bait. Once bait is placed, it cannot be removed without breaking the trap. When broken, the trap will drop the bait, if any, and the reed chest and stick used to craft it.
Note that not all foods in a given category are suitable bait. Although mushrooms are considered a vegetable and can be applied to traps, none of the trappable animals will accept them as appropriate bait. Likewise, pickled vegetables can be applied to traps, but none of the animals that accept vegetables will eat them. See History section for technical explanation.
Tip:
Note that while wolf pups can be trapped, they cannot be sold to traders. Only a wolf pup purchased from a Survival goods trader may be sold. |

- 2 Any variety of raw, cooked, or cured meat (including fish).
- 3 As of 1.21.5, baby raccoons cannot be trapped due to a bug.[1]
Some animals cannot be trapped, but will still eat the bait and trigger the trap. They have much higher chances to break the trap.

History
| Version | Description | |
|---|---|---|
| 1.21.0 | Dry grass can no longer be placed as bait in a basket trap. | |
| Basket traps now use food tags instead of food categories to determine if bait is suitable. This prevents certain foods from working as bait. For example, onions and mushrooms are not tagged as "tastyvegetable", which is not included in animal diets. | ||
| Basket traps now define a minimum weight value for bait (default value is 0.6), and food tags can include a unique weight value. This further defines which type of food can effectively be used as bait, as any food with a weight under 0.6 will always be ignored by animals (e.g. cassava can be placed in a basket trap, but it has a weight value of 0.2 for baby pigs, therefore it will be ignored regardless if the pig is able to eat it). | ||
| 1.19.0 | Basket traps were added to the game. | |
