Meat
Meat is a type of food obtained from hunting animals. Meat must be cooked or processed before it can be eaten, and different meats have different nutritional values. These, along with legumes, make up the protein category of food.
Obtaining
Wild animals can be found in all of the different climates. Once an animal has been killed, its body can be harvested by holding
with a knife.
Poultry is the meat of chickens.
Redmeat is the meat of herbivorous mammals, such as pigs, sheep and hares.
Bushmeat is the meat of carnivorous and omnivorous mammals, such as wolves, bears and foxes.
Fish is the meat of fish.
Animal domestication
- See also: Animal husbandry
Chickens and some herbivorous mammals can be domesticated. The player can trap them in an enclosure using various strategies and provide them with animal feed in troughs. When a well-fed male and female are within proximity, they will mate.
Carnivorous and omnivorous animals are too aggressive to be domesticated. Fish cannot be domesticated.
Usage
Food
Meat must be cooked over a firepit before it can be eaten, or used as a cooking ingredient in meals such as meat stew, soup, and pie. Meat that is in a meal gains 50-88% more satiety compared to when it is plain cooked. Meats have the highest satiety of all cooking ingredients besides cabbage, and are a staple in filling meals.
Bushmeat cannot be used as a cooking ingredient.
Curing
- See also: Food preservation
1 piece of meat and 2 pieces of salt can be sealed in a barrel for 20 days to make cured meat. Cured meat lasts a maximum of 3.4 years and provides 75% of the satiety of plain cooked meat when eaten directly. When used in a meal, cured meat has the same satiety as its uncured form.
Stinkbait
1 piece of meat, 1 aromatic plant such as fennel or licorice, and 1L of water can be cooked to make stinkbait for fishing.
Types of meat
Preservation
Raw meat is fresh for only 1.5 days, which can be extended by storing it in a storage vessel and cellar.
Meat can be processed in several ways to extend its fresh time:
- Meat can be used as a meal ingredient. If all ingredients are fresh, the meal will last up to 4-7 days depending on the meal type. It can then be stored in a crock to receive a x0.1-0.85 perish speed multiplier.
- Meat can be cured with salt in a barrel. If the meat is fresh, cured meat will last up to 3.4 years. If the meat is losing its freshness but hasn’t started spoiling yet, it will still last a minimum of 1.8 years.
In the above methods, the final product’s freshness is proportional to the ingredients’ freshness. If any ingredient is spoiling, the final product will be partially spoiled too. These are best utilized for newly-harvested meat.
The following methods disregard the ingredients’ freshness, and are best utilized for spoiling meat:
- Meat can be added to a pie that lasts 8 days (12 days if charred).
