Reeds are a type of plant which can be harvested using a knife . Reeds are used in many crafting recipes, and are critical in the early game for inventory expansion and item storage. There are two variants of reeds: cattails and papyrus, which are found in temperate and warm climates respectively.

Obtaining

A typical patch of cattails on a shore.

Cattails grow in or near shallow bodies of water, in temperate, wet environments.[1] Papyrus grows in warm, wet environments.[2] Reeds can be obtained by harvesting grown plants. If a knife is not used, the roots will be broken and the plant will not regrow. Cattails regrow after 7 days. Papyrus regrows after 5.5 days.

In cold climates, cattails can be acquired by breaking Arctic supplies vessels found in ruins.

Roots

After collecting the reeds, the roots can be harvested with a knife, then replanted elsewhere or cooked.[3] This can be helpful to create fields of reeds for convenient harvesting, especially with the use of a scythe . The roots may be planted on soil, sand, gravel, and muddy gravel. While reeds may be planted in a single block of water, they do not require a source of water to grow.

Tip:
Reed plants cannot generate additional roots. They can only be moved.

Usage

Cattail reeds and papyrus can be used interchangeably. Using papyrus in some recipes, such as hand baskets and reed chests, will result in a papyrus version with a different name and appearance.

Crafting

Reeds are a vital early game resource, used to create two different bags for expanding the player's inventory, the hand basket and hunter backpack , as well as the reed chest , an early in-world container with 8 slots. The hand basket requires 10 reeds and provides 3 inventory slots, while the hunter backpack requires 15 reeds and 3 small pelts or 1 medium, large, or huge pelt, and provides 4 inventory slots.

Throughout the game, reeds are needed to create healing poultices , rope , and skeps for beekeeping . Reeds are also used for the throwable beenade item.

The roots can also be made into amulets.

As wild food

Cattail and papyrus roots can be eaten after being cooked in a firepit , providing 100 vegetable satiety . They cannot be used to cook meals and have a shelf life of 2 days. Though they are both called "Cooked wild rhizomes", they have different appearances and will not stack with each other.

Because cattail and papyrus roots do not spoil before being cooked, they can be stored indefinitely as an emergency food source.
