Lime
Lime is a material used in leather working and crafting brick blocks and plaster. It can be processed into limewater, quicklime, and slaked lime.
Obtaining
Finding limestone
There are 3 types of rocks that can be turned into lime: limestone, chalk, and marble. Limestone and chalk are sedimentary rocks that generate as entire rock layers close to the surface. Marble is a metamorphic rock that appears as a deposit within phyllite or slate rock layers, akin to an ore vein.
These, along with all rock layers, generate randomly and are not influenced by different climates or geography. While exploring, it is recommended to pay attention to the top stone layer. In areas where the top rock layer is sedimentary or basalt, there may be another sedimentary layer below that the player can check by descending into a cave.
A Tier 1 pickaxe (copper and higher) is required to mine rocks.
Grinding
Lime is created by grinding a limestone, chalk, or marble stones in a quern. Sea shells can also be ground into lime, but they cannot be acquired in large quantities.
Trading
16 lime can be purchased from the commodities trader for 1 to 3 rusty gears. When in stock, this trade can be performed 9 to 15 times per reset.
Processing
Limewater
1 piece of lime can be combined with 1L of water in a barrel to make 1L of limewater. A maximum of 50L of limewater can be created in a single barrel, but the materials must be in the correct ratio.
Quicklime
2 piece of lime can be heated directly in a firepit to 825° to make 1 piece of quicklime.
Slaked lime
1 piece of quicklime can be combined with 1L of water in a barrel to make 2L of slaked lime.
Usage
Leather working
In the first step of leather working, raw hide and limewater are sealed in a barrel for 20 hours. Limewater can be substituted with diluted borax.
| Hide | Limewater (L) |
|---|---|
| 1x Small | 2 |
| 1x Medium | 4 |
| 1x Large | 6 |
| 1x Bear | 8 |
Building materials
1 piece of quicklime and 1 sand can be combined in the crafting grid to make plaster, a building block.
With a barrel containing 1L of slaked lime, 1 sand can be added to make 2 mortar, a crafting material for clay and refractory brick blocks.
