Hares are one of the common animals found in the world, and are a source of redmeat and small raw hides .
Spawning
Animal | Range of temperatures | Range of rain | Max light level |
---|---|---|---|
Desert hare | 22°C to 40°C | 0.20 to 0.45 | 8 |
Normal hare | -5°C to 25°C | 0.30 to 0.90 | 6 |
Arctic hare | -70°C to -8°C | 0.25 to 1.00 | 8 |
Hares spawn on tall grass blocks (including "very short" and "eaten" versions) growing on solid, untilled soil blocks . Hares will not spawn on lit blocks. An easy way to prevent hare spawns is by placing rocks on soil blocks to so new tall grass does not grow. They spawn in groups of 1 - 4 individuals.
Behavior
Hares seek vegetables and grain to eat that either the player has dropped on the ground or is growing as crops on tilled soil (except for pumpkins and onions ). If a hare finds a player's farm, it will eat the growing crops regardless of the crop's growth stage. When consumed, the crop will die and leave behind a dry plant that the player can break and recover a seed from. Hares will not seek out or destroy wild crops.
Hares always flee from players and other mobs within 12 blocks, even before receiving damage. Adult hares can jump up to one block high, meaning hares cannot jump over fences or out of pits 2 blocks deep. However, hares may be able to jump over fences bordered by water blocks due to the extra boost in height from jumping out of water.
Domestication and Breeding
Hares can be domesticated through breeding . They can be trapped with reed basket traps or by being chased into a fenced or 2-block-high enclosure.
Hares can be fed by throwing edible food on the ground or by placing it into a large trough . A female will need to eat 2 portions before she can breed. If a male is close by, the female will become pregnant with a gestation time of 5 days before giving birth to a litter of 1 to 4 leverets. After giving birth, the female will enter a cooldown period before she can breed again. The leverets grow to adulthood after 336 hours, or 14 days. Unlike other domesticatable animals, a female hare will not display her pregnancy status.
Starting with the 3rd generation, the player can instantly kill hares with a cleaver . Hares will lose their fear of the player after 10 generations.
