Shield
A shield is an item used for defense, it only works when used in your offhand and is more effective if used while crouching.
Shield comparison
All shields share the same block chances:
| Usage | Projectile Block Chance | Melee Block Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Active | 100% | 90% |
| Passive | 20% | 20% |
The base shield type determines how much damage is absorbed on a successful block:
| Shield Type | Base Durability | Projectile Absorption | Melee Absorption |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crude | 80 | 3 | 3 |
| Wood Round | 300 | 6 | 4 |
| Leather-Reinforced Round | 350 | 7 | 4.5 |
| Metal Round | 450 | 10 | 5 |
| Blackguard | 400 | 12 | 5.5 |
Durability Modifiers
Round shields can receive durability modifiers depending on the choice of materials used to create them. The type of wood affects non-reinforced shields only:
| Wood Type | Durability |
|---|---|
| Aged | -200 |
| Ebony | +30 |
| Purpleheart | +20 |
| Oak | +15 |
| Others | +0 |
While the type of metal affects all three variants:
| Metal Type | Durability |
|---|---|
| Tin Bronze | +0 |
| Bismuth bronze | +20 |
| Black bronze | +30 |
| Gold | -50 |
| Silver | -40 |
| Iron | +60 |
| Meteoric iron | +90 |
| Steel | +120 |

Leather-Reinforced Round Shield
The appearance and shield stats depend on the type of metal used (but not wood), see Durability Modifiers for details.
