Shield

From Vintage Story Wiki

A shield is an item used for defense, it only works when used in your offhand and is more effective if used while crouching.

Shield comparison

All shields share the same block chances:

Usage Projectile Block Chance Melee Block Chance
Active 100% 90%
Passive 20% 20%

The base shield type determines how much damage is absorbed on a successful block:

Shield Type Base Durability Projectile Absorption Melee Absorption
Crude 80 3 3
Wood Round 300 6 4
Leather-Reinforced Round 350 7 4.5
Metal Round 450 10 5
Blackguard 400 12 5.5

Durability Modifiers

Round shields can receive durability modifiers depending on the choice of materials used to create them. The type of wood affects non-reinforced shields only:

Wood Type Durability
Aged -200
Ebony +30
Purpleheart +20
Oak +15
Others +0

While the type of metal affects all three variants:

Metal Type Durability
Tin Bronze +0
Bismuth bronze +20
Black bronze +30
Gold -50
Silver -40
Iron +60
Meteoric iron +90
Steel +120
