Refractory bricks are a material for crafting refractory brick blocks . Refractory brick blocks are used to build a cementation furnace and coke oven .

Obtaining

Crafting

There are 3 tiers of refractory bricks with progressively higher heat resistance, which reduce the probability of being damaged in a damage calculation.

  • Tier 1 unfired refractory bricks are crafted using fireclay , crushed quartz , and crushed bauxite . A pulverizer with bronze pounder caps or a higher tier metal is required.
  • Tier 2 unfired refractory bricks additionally use crushed olivine . A pulverizer with iron pounder caps or a higher tier metal is required.
  • Tier 3 unfired refractory bricks additionally use crushed ilmenite . A pulverizer with steel pounder caps is required.

Unfired refractory bricks must be fired in a pit kiln or beehive kiln before use.

Natural generation

Underground ruins , specifically kitchens, may have a small amount of tier 1 refractory brick blocks in the fireplace.[1]

Usage

Building

Refractory bricks can be combined with mortar to create tier-specific refractory brick blocks. All refractory bricks used in the crafting recipe must be of the same tier.

There are 2 shapes: full blocks and gratings.

Cementation furnace

See also: Cementation furnace

Refractory bricks (full blocks, gratings, and doors) are required to build a cementation furnace , a structure used for steel making . Every time the cementation furnace completes a firing, a damage calculation is performed, and each refractory brick block has a chance of being damaged based on its heat resistance.

  • Tier 1: 90% heat resistance (1 in 10 chance to break)
  • Tier 2: 95% heat resistance (1 in 20 chance to break)
  • Tier 3: 99.9% heat resistance (1 in 1000 chance to break)

Damaged refractory brick blocks drop 1-3 refractory bricks.[2] Damaged refractory brick gratings drop 0-2 refractory bricks.[3] Refractory brick kiln doors do not receive any damage.

Beehive kiln

See also: Beehive kiln

Refractory and fireclay bricks (full blocks, gratings, and doors) can be used to build a beehive kiln , a structure used for firing a large amount of raw clay items at once. Compared to refractory bricks, fireclay bricks have a lower resource cost and a heat resistance of 50% (1 in 2 chance to break).[4]

However, the beehive kiln performs a damage calculation once every 168 hours of operation, which allows for up to 15 firings of clay items before the first damage calculation occurs. It is therefore not recommended to build using refractory bricks unless the player intends to use the beehive kiln extensively.

History

Version Description
1.14.0 rc.1 Refractory bricks, blocks, and gratings were introduced.
rc.5 In the tier 2 and tier 3 refractory brick crafting recipe, crushed peridotite was changed to crushed olivine.
1.15.0 rc.1 The block breaking time for refractory bricks was increased, and a mining bonus for ceramic materials was added to pickaxes.
1.16.5 rc.1 The drops from damaged refractory brick blocks were adjusted to be less than the replacement amount.
1.20.0 pre.1 Refractory brick gratings are now subject to damage from the cementation furnace, and have an alternative damaged model, in addition to the cracked texture overlay.

Notes

  • Refractory bricks can be thrown and deal 1 blunt damage.
