Pulverizer

A pulverizer is a mechanism is used to crush ores that are too hard to be ground in a quern.
Creation
A pulverizer is composed of a pulverizer frame, a pulverizer toggle, and two capped pounders.
| Ingredients | Crafting Recipe |
|---|---|
| 1x Hammer 1x Chisel 1x Wooden Axle 1x Metal Plate |
A pulverizer is constructed by placing the frame, a two-block-tall structure, on the ground. The toggle, pounders, and two caps are attached by pressing
while holding the item.
Pounder caps

Pounder caps can be smithed from bronze, iron, meteoric iron or steel. Each type of metal can crush materials that require the corresponding tier and below. When constructing a pulverizer, both caps must be made of the same metal and attached at the same time.
| Metal | Tier | Crushable materials | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tin bronze | 2 | Quartz, bauxite, alum, tin (cassiterite), zinc (sphalerite), cinnabar, lapis lazuli | |
| Bismuth bronze | |||
| Black bronze | |||
| Iron | 3 | Olivine, iron (magnetite, limonite, hematite) | |
| Meteoric iron | |||
| Steel | 4 | Ilmenite, chromite | |
Usage
The pulverizer processes mineral and metal ores into their crushed forms, which are usable in crafting.
Some ores have a yield of less than 1, which represents a chance to obtain an output. For example, an ilmenite nugget has a 33% chance of yielding 1 crushed ilmenite.[1] Metal ores can also be processed in chunk form, and their yield will be proportional to the number of nuggets they contain.[2]
| Material | Input | Output | Yield (per nugget) | Usage | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quartz | 1 | Refractory bricks | 2 | ||
| Bauxite | 1 | Refractory bricks | |||
| Alum | 1 | Mordant | |||
| Cassiterite | 0.33 | Mordant | |||
| Sphalerite | 0.331 | Fish taxidermy | |||
| Cinnabar | 1 | Dye | |||
| Lapis lazuli | 1 | Dye | |||
| Olivine | 1 | Refractory bricks | 3 | ||
| Magnetite | 0.33 | Bombs | |||
| Limonite | 0.33 | Bombs | |||
| Hematite | 0.33 | Bombs | |||
| Ilmenite | 0.33 | Refractory bricks | 4 | ||
| Chromite | 0.33 | Mordant, sturdy leather |
1 Sphalerite nuggets cannot be placed in a pulverizer, possibly due to a bug. Only sphalerite ore chunks can be crushed.
Operation
- For more info on mechanical power, see Mechanical power.
A pulverizer requires a mechanical power source, such as a windmill or water wheel; it cannot be powered manually.
Power

A pulverizer receives power from a powered axle that is connected to the left or right of the bottom half of the frame, aligning with the pulverizer toggle.
Input
Two items can be inserted into the front of the pulverizer frame, under each pounder.
This can be automated by placing a hopper above an elbow chute leading to the front of the frame. The hopper can also be replaced with a chest.
Output
Crushed items will be ejected from the back of the pulverizer frame, where they can be collected by a player.
This can be automated by placing a hopper under the output area that leads to a chute system or chest. The hopper should be placed at the same level as the block underneath the pulverizer. Any block adjacent to the back of the pulverizer will obstruct the output, forcing items to eject to the left and right sides of the obstructive block.
To ensure that ejected items do not land on the sides above the hopper, the player can place additional blocks on the left and right sides at the same level as the pulverizer.
Tip:
As with other mechanisms, the pulverizer's output as an item entity may despawn if the player is too far away. This issue cannot be solved by hoppers, as they only function while the player is in range. |

History
| Version | Description | |
|---|---|---|
| 1.14.0 | rc.1 | The pulverizer was introduced alongside refractory bricks. |
| rc.5 | The throughput speed of the pulverizer was reduced by 40%. | |
| 1.18.0 | pre.1 | Nuggets of ilmenite, galena, chromite, and cassiterite can now be crushed. They have a yield of less than 1 to maintain parity with their ore chunk forms. |
