Creation
Metal plates can be smithed with two ingots on an anvil. Plates can be made manually, but it is far less strenuous to use a helve hammer instead.
Plates can be made of any metal, except nickel and cupronickel.
Usage
Metal plates have a variety of uses depending on the metal they are made from. Almost all can be used for making lanterns. Copper, bronze, iron, and steel plates can be used to make brigandine and plate armor. Metal plates can also be smithed into metal chains or metal scales directly. Some smithing recipes can substitute plates instead of ingots as the base ingredient. Most of these will result in a huge loss of invested metal in comparison, while making the process only slightly easier.
Copper plates are required for making hoppers and chutes, distilleries, and copper roofing blocks. Silver and gold plates can be used in lanterns to increase their light level.
Metal plates can be "converted" into bits of the same metal type with the use of a chisel.
Storage
Metal plates can be put in storage containers. They can be placed on the ground, up to 16 per block. Breaking the stack instead removing it will cause plates above to collapse and possibly cause crushing damage.
