Note: Creating pelts is a different process from producing leather .

Pelts are animal hides that have been treated with fat . They are used in the creation of various pieces of equipment, such as lamellar armor for protection, fur clothing for staying warm in cold weather , and bows for ranged combat. Pelts are also required for the hunter backpack , an early-game bag which can hold an additional item compared to the hand basket .

Creation

Pelts are created by combining raw or salted hides with fat in the crafting grid and allowing them to cure.

Oiling

A single lump of fat can be used to oil up to 4 small hides, 2 medium hides, or 1 large hide.

Curing

A partially-cured oiled hide.

Next, the oiled hide must cure for 48 hours. The process will always take 48 hours; the storage location does not affect curing speed. Oiled hides do not spoil like normal hides or other perishables, and any previous spoiling progress will not affect the final pelt.

Hovering the cursor over the oiled hide will display how much progress has been made. Once it reaches 100%, the oiled hide will become a pelt.

Bear pelts

Bear pelts will start with the head still attached. A knife must be used to split it into the head and body pelts. Bear hide armor pieces require different parts of the pelt. The body and leg armor require the body, with or without the head, while the helmet requires the head.

Ingredients Crafting Recipe
1x Knife
1x Bear pelt with head

Bear body pelts can be split again using a knife to obtain normal pelts. The number and type of pelt depends on the type of bear. This is not related to the number of huge scraped hides obtained from each soaked bear hide during the leathermaking process.

Bear type Pelts
Polar 3 Huge
Brown 2 Huge
Black 2 Large
Panda 1 Large
Sun 1 Medium

Usage

Pelts are used to craft the following items:

Storage

Both oiled hides and pelts can be placed on the ground or in containers . This does not affect the curing process.
