Grain
Grain is a category of food in Vintage Story that encompasses grain crops and cassava. Grains can be obtained by foraging in the wild and farming. Grains have different nutritional values and growing requirements.

Obtaining
Small patches of grain crops can be found while exploring, in areas with the following temperature, precipitation, and forestation:
| Wild crop | Temperature (°C) | Rainfall | Forestation | Likelihood | Amount | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Icon | Name | Minimum | Maximum | Minimum | Maximum | Minimum | Maximum | ||
| Flax | 3 | 31 | 0.35 | 0.75 | 0 | 0.5 | 9% | 0-27 | |
| Spelt | 3 | 26 | 0.38 | 0.75 | 0 | 0.5 | 3.6% | 0-27 | |
| Rice | 22 | 40 | 0.35 | 1 | 0 | 0.5 | 3.6% | 0-27 | |
| Rye | -10 | 14 | 0.35 | 0.75 | 0 | 0.5 | 3.6% | 0-27 | |
| Sunflower | 15 | 36 | 0.3 | 0.65 | 0 | 0.3 | 5% | 1-27 | |
| Amaranth | 17 | 42 | 0.35 | 0.8 | 1 | 0.4 | 7% | 8-24 | |
| Cassava | 23 | 48 | 0.28 | 0.6 | 0.1 | 0.4 | 7% | 1-7 | |
Chunks meeting these conditions have a fixed likelihood of generating an amount of crops, which might include a mix of mature and immature crops.
Purchasing
The agricultural trader sells 1-3 flax seeds at an average price of 4 rusty gears.
5-7 spelt, rice, and rye seeds can be found in cracked vessels (seed), which appear in surface ruins or can be purchased from the treasure hunter for an average price of 8 rusty gears.
Cultivation
All grain crops can be cultivated by collecting seeds and planting them in farmland.

Mature farmland-grown grains yield the amount listed above and drop 1 or 2 seeds. Immature farmland-grown grains do not yield anything and have a 70% chance to drop 1 seed. The exceptions are amaranth and cassava, which yield a reduced amount at the second-to-last stage (ie: stage 8).
Usage
Food
Grains can be eaten raw, used as a cooking ingredient in porridge, or ground into flour at a quern. Flour can be mixed with water to make dough, and then baked into bread or pies in a clay oven. When cooked, the satiety of grains generally increases by 300% in the final product.
Alcohol
Flour and water can be fermented into ale, and further distilled into spirits.
Animal husbandry
Grain can be used as animal feed in large and small troughs. Flax grain is especially well-suited for this due to its lower satiety compared to other grains, since animal feed does not consider satiety.
Fiber
Mature flax crops drop 3-5 flax fibers, which are used to create flax twine and linen. These have a wide range of applications, and farming them is necessary for technological progression: making clothing, constructing windmills and sailboats, and more.
Composting
Unprocessed grain has a long shelf-life and a transition ratio of 0.25, making it ill-suited as a material for rot in composting. However, when grain is ground into flour and turned into dough, it is fresh for 2 days and has a transition ratio of 1. In this way, grain farming can be a highly efficient method to create rot.
10 dough produces 10 rot; the same amount is produced by 20 vegetables or 40 fruits.
List of grains
* Dried cassava cannot be eaten directly. It must be ground into flour, combined with water to make dough, and then baked into bread or pie. Once cooked, it has the same nutritional properties as spelt, rye, etc.
Preservation
Grains are fresh for 90 days, and flour is fresh for an even longer 180 days. These can be extended by storing grain in a storage vessel—which has a greater perish speed reduction for grain-related items—and a cellar.
Grains can be processed in several ways to extend their fresh time:
- Grains can be fermented into ale that lasts a maximum of 1.3 years.
- Ale can be distilled into whiskey and vodka that lasts indefinitely.
- Grains can be ground into flour. This will reset its fresh time and is particularly useful for grains that have begun to spoil.
